jegs roll cages

hi yall mi names mike and im a newbie to this site. im 15 and live on th west coast of florida around tampa. i just bought a 2wd manual 1988 ranger with a 2.9 v6 in it. i am going to be driving this truck offroad almost all the time and hardly ever on the road. i was wondering what are the first the things i should do to this truck. also i figure i will eventually flip it and need to put a roll cage in it asap. i already had the thing coming up on to wheels in a empty lot i was messing around in. for the roll cage i would love to make my own but i have no tubing/pipe benders that will bend anything above 1 in. then i recently saw a pre made kit from jegs. have any of you used these are they any good, how hard are they to put in. i can weld with mig and stick but mostly use stick.

also how do you weld chrome moly steel

Hi Mike you don't need chrome molly to begin with besides it requires an experienced TIG welder to do the job right. Go mild steel and you will be fine.

I have not used them but I expect Jegs products to be good quality unless someone else here has a say or knows a better place for a Ranger cage.

i am assuming the cage is just pre bent pipe that you weld in the truck

I've heard many mixed reviews. BradZ71 has one he's installing in his BroncoII. He seems to like it. I've seen pictures of the cages for other applications and the fit is terrible, the bends are less than nice, and the overall quality just isn't there.

You get what you pay for, and that holds especially true in tube work.

Hopefully cheapthrills will add to the thread, but I recall the junkyard dog getting a jegs cage and nick was not happy with it.

yeah im pry just gonna weld up the rear if the spool costs too much. unless i find one at the hudsonville swap meet. yeah teh jegs cage is a royal pain to put into the truck manuvering things and welding is hard with one person. but at least its gonna be safe.

total PITA, if your not gonna chop the roof off, then trying to weld the halo and other top bars are about impossible. Same with the dash peices. Instructions were just a single drawing of the cage assmebled. Basically doing a jigsaw puzzle. He spent about $200 more on his cage then i did making my own. We were not impressed for being a prebent cage. Basically all the tubes needed to be cut to proper length. Wouldn't have been so bad if the directions were remotely helpful in tueb location.

yeah, cut the roof off the ranger and weld it back on
