Thinking of buying a new Ranger

First time poster.

I am thinking of buying a new Ranger for hunting a fishing and was wondering if I should get it with a manual or automatic transmission.

Any recommendations?

Manual. Better gas and more fun.
As well as easier for hunting and fishing, as you would spend a lot of time on back roads.

Thats kinda what I was thinking.

I used to have an auto 3.0 Ranger Edge and now I have a 2.3 5spd, The 5 spd is nice cause I know my truck is a little quicker and is better on gas because if it, but sometimes its just a pain in the ass.

Its just that I have heard mixed review about the automatic transmissions for the Rangers.

It's my general understanding that automatic transmissions really shine for heavy towing or stop and go city driving.

I was thinking that if I don't need an automatic transmission then I may be able to sidestep any possible problems by getting a Ranger with a manual transmission.

Besides, I was reading around on this forum that with proper clutching and range selection, the towing capacity of a Rangers manual transmission far exceeds its rated numbers.

Its easier to keep control of what gear your truck is in while your going up steep hills and whatnot. But then again.. thats why they put 1st and 2nd gear on automatics along with drive..

If you have to deal with heavy traffic frequently, get the auto. My manual transmission Ranger was fun, but in heavy Charlotte traffic it was tiring. My 5 speed auto is nicer for day to day use.

1995+ 4R and 5R autos are pretty good. My Explorer had 158K on its original 4R55E and it still shifted great. I beat the snot out of it too.

One thing to consider on the manual- if the slave cylinder starts leaking, it is INTERNAL -inside the bell housing. The transmission needs to be dropped to replace it. This is not the industry norm...

Are these known to go often?

Not typically. Sometimes a bad one will escape the manufacturing plant, but they rarely need to be serviced before you have to do the clutch anyway.

It depends on what motor you're choosing as well. The 2.3 and 3.0 get the 4R44E, which in my experience (check my sig) is a terrible transmission even with the most careful maintenance. If you get the 4.0, you'll be fine with an auto.

All I know is a replacement is VERY pricey, I had to buy one. :bawling:
