On my last truck, I replaced the catalytic converter with a straight pipe. Some people call them a test pipe or race pipe. My local muffler shop wouldn't go near the cat but they would weld flanges on both ends of a short piece of pipe. Switching it out took about ten minutes. The truck was a 1994 Toyota Pickup with the 22RE four-cylinder. I had the LC Engineering header and a Dynomax muffler. It sounded just right and ran great but I did give up bottom end power. I had to give it more gas to get started and the power came on later in the RPM range. The benefit is that at higher RPMs, the engine was more responsive, had more power, and seemed less strained. Now I have a 1993 Ford Ranger with the 2.3 and I am considering my exhaust options. I plan to leave the cat alone unless it becomes clogged. You can have too much of a good thing. In my opinion, a free flow exhaust with the cat is the best set up.
