hey i'm about to order tires but can't decide what ones to go with, i don't do too much serious mudding, just logging roads and the odd trail or two, so i know i probably should go with the all terrains, but the Muds look so good...what would you do? what do you guys prefer
bfg muds for 194
Pro comp muds for 196
bf all terrains for 177
or pro comp all terrains for 162

Yeah the muds do look alot better, stick with the BFG's. They're better than the Pro Craps.

Definatly go with all terrains. I have BFG All Terrain T/A's and I think they are a great tire. I also drive on logging roads and go off roading time to time. You will also get alot better gas milage than with mud terrians and with high gas prices that is something to consider. Also all terrians are generally less expensive and you will get more miles out of them.

Muds. All terrains are warmed over all-seasons.

i had bfg a/ts.... they were good, lasted long, but sucked off road(even wet grass was too much for them) they looked good though. i didnt realize how little traction they had until i got my dunlops("dunflops"). they are awesome for an all-terrain tire, way more tread. so much better traction..... but i still wish they were muds.

ok....32x11.5r15 bfg muds it is!!! i can get them for 195 a tire...do you guys think that gas mileage will be much worse than with my 245/75R16's?

i go as skinny as i can, 10.50's. i get the same gas mileage with my 33x10.50 as i did with my 235/75r15's.

its really about 1/2. depending on what brand you get. sizes mean almost nothing anymore.

This was a perfect discussion for me as I'm making the EXACT same choice right now, m/t or a/t.......
I had pretty well decided on m/t's already. I was going to go with the pro-comp Xm/t's but now I'm hearing bad things about the procomps in this thread. Should I be looking at the Grabber m/t's (same as the bfg m/t but much cheaper)? Or does anyone have much experience on the pro-comps?
Maybe I should just start my own thread...

Stay away from the poo comps, I've heard nothing but bad things about them. A buddy ran the grabbers on his truck and liked them. I've only run BFG muds, Goodyear MTR's and Kumho Muds on my trucks and have had no issues with them. I just ordered some 34 LTB's for the ranger, and I'm curious to how they'll perform.

With gas prices the way they are I wouldn't get a mud tire unless I needed it.
They are cheaper and they last longer, and really some are aggresive enough to more than likely save your tail if you do get into trouble.

I have been rolling on A/T's for years and have yet to get stuck. Mud, snow whatever, just admit to yourself that you can't handle anything more than a couple inches deep. From a foot of snow to 6" of mud they are good enough for the typical person with 4x4.
Getting tires because of looks isn't the best way to shop for tires.
I do know there have been times as I drag all four muds up to a stop sign in snow I wish I would have gotten A/T's on my Ranger.

I've had ZERO issues with my ProComp's. Wearing well even with a less than perfect alignment. Keep in mind that their M/T and M/T Extreme are different tires.

Are you running the M/T's or the Extreme's. The X's look like a really good tire, nice side lugs, good tread pattern......

It saves money for other projects... like my Ranger. I don't like spending money on things I dont really need. Plus it keeps the truck better for towing.

I thought they looked like a great tire, they're made from a slightly harder compound that will wear a bit better on the road as well. I don't know why but I "heard" some guys slaggin them on another board-apparently Toyo's are for sell-outs?? idk?
I thought they'd be really pricey, but I lucked out and my mechanic can hook me up with 4 the same price as the bfgs or pro-comps, which is not too much more than the Grabbers......

I'm going to have to go ahead and sort of, disagree with you on this one.
I have used more types of offroad tires than I can even count, from Swampers to Hi-Tech retreads. I recently purchased a set of new 35x12.5x15 ProComp m/t tires. They are by far the best tire I have ever used, if you're looking for both on and offroad performance. The tires cruise smoothly and quietly down the freeway at 70 MPH, and provide great performance on the trail. They are honestly the single best thing I have ever bought for my truck.

Noise is a big consideration if you drive your truck on and offroad. One of the reasons I got rid of my Swampers and Boggers was because they were so damn noisy on the road.
Now I think m/t tires are fairly quiet. However they can definitely be heard, and if that noise bothers you, go with the a/t's.

I say go with the Pro-Comps, from what I have heard they are very good tires.
Another thing to add, my mud (Mud Dawgs) tires caked over much heavier and more often then the All Terrains ;)

Toyo.
I've seen Toyo m/t's go almost 60k mi compared to BFG a/t's at high 30's on the same rig, same setup. If you can get them for the same price as pro-comps, it makes it an easy call.

That's why I gave up thinking a long time ago! :D
As a side note, my 34" LTB's came in and are mounted. They are a lot quieter than the 31" Kumho MT's I was running previously, (that doesn't mean that I'm going to take up thinking again) :stop:

i disagree, the pro comps are siped, and are studdable for winter (mud tires dont like snow on the road! i drove one winter with my front diff blown, so 2wd open with mud tires--was interesting!). and i dunno where he got his prices, but they are always cheaper than the BFG MTs..
i've ran pro comp mud terrains and bfg all terrains, i sliced a bfg 3 ply sidewall on the same trails within a month, but for some reason the pro comp 2 ply sidewalls only have scrapes after 2 years of hard wheeling.
i have a used set of bfg mts to go on now, so we'll see how they fair.

I was deceiding between the BFG and Cooper STT in a 33x12.5R15. The STT has siped tread, excellent in rain, and has more aggressive sidewalls. I've got 2 buddies running BFG Muds, and both like the STT pattern more and were very impressed by how they did offroad.

hey pillen 140 can you post some pics of your 33 10.50's im thinkin of getting a set I even heard you can get away with using them without a lift. I also like how it isn't absolutly necessary to change the gearing when the tires are that skinny.

i really wish my bronco had bfg m/t's but it came with 35" bfg a/t's brand new so im not complaining, they are descent but suck in mud, and im not talking 6" deep cause thats not mud, im talking few ft deep, tread just fills in with mud since there not self cleaning and then ur stuck, but eventually make it through with a lot of skinny pedal use with the 351m. i think u will be happier with the muds if ur gonna use it offroad
a/ts do look cool atleast, but not aggressive as id like

i also live in vancouver, wouldn't get any tire that isn't siped unless it's on a trail rig. snow, ice, rain... gotta be able to stop so you don't run over the civics when they stop for no reason.
i'll run bfg at's to do some weekend off roading with my dd until the day it's a trail rig. then go to mt's
all about priorities.

Well i run two set's... i have 33 BFG a/t's for long distance road journey's and i have the 35 Procomp x-terrain's... I love the look of the x-terrain (and they aren't to loud) as for gas miles... to be honest since i still have 3:73's (i know, i know they are getting changed) and 35's it cost $132.35 to go to Sunpeaks and back (Vancouver) last weekend.. which ain't bad... But and the big but... the procomp are already starting to seporate... and they only have 7000 Km... (although my buddy has run 4 sets to the ground with no problems.... i just happened to get a crappy set)
Hope this helps

I also had to make that decision. However I wanted to keep my stock rims as I loved the look and they are in mint cond. I opted for 33"/10.50/R15 BFG Muds over the A/T's. They look great, however sometimes I feel I should've bough wider. I have 1.5" wheel spacers at home that are waiting to go on. I think that will improve the look. I just hope they fit over the front hubs... will see!!
