the compressor on my 98 ranger isn't kicking in when I turn on the AC. On warm/hot days with the engine at idle the compressor sometimes kicks on and makes a loud humming noise. With the AC turned on to AC or MAX AC I only ever get hot air. I thought it was low on charge so I got a bottle of freon. When I went to put it in the pressure gauge was showing normal pressure (just below do not add). Any suggestions?

Sounds like a dead compressor to me. They often leak when the bearing goes.

But you really need an A/C shop. Diagnosis over the Net is VERY unreliable.
