I've never seen a train with a driveshaft before. I think they have it attached to a electric motor to move it back and forth.

Yeah, it must be for display purposes. There's no way in hell a driveshaft like that could put power to the rails for a real locomotive.
 
That drive shaft is for a generator it also battery box mounted under the caboose when the train was not moving.Most cabooses had a a belt mounted on a wheel very much like on a car.

It's not for propelling the train. It's a drive shaft to turn a electric generator for the passenger car. Back then the cars didn't get their electric power from the steam engine.
