Harbor Freight has this $11 timing light:

Is there any reason it wouldn't work? I really don't need one that often, as most vehicles I deal with don't have a distributor. My Ranger is the only vehicle that does. So would this work for the very few times I'll need to check the timing?

Should be fine.

The more expensive one with the advance dial is inaccurate, though. Putting the advance dial at 0 and timing the vehicle to 10 deg BTDC should be the same as putting the advance dial to 10 and timing to the TC mark. But it isn't.
