How to tell the age of a tire
Yes, the 1997 looks like a copyright date.
Every tire must have a 4-digit date code on it; say, for example, 1505. The first two digits (15) would be the 15th week of the year, and the last two digits would be 2005 (or 1995 for a really old tire).
Thus, 1505 would be the 15th week of 2005. 3604 would be the 36th week of 2004, etc. Check your tires for the date. It will be a 4-digit number, usually close to the rim.
That can tell you their age, but it won't automatically tell you why the sidewall separation is occurring. That's a bummer. I had a set of Mastercraft (Cooper) Courser A/Ts that had that happen on two tires.
