Ok Bob, which setting do you use? I really need to read the book on mine. I use the "A" setting a lot and "Auto".

Sometimes, no matter what setting I am on it refuses to take a picture, zooms like crazy and then nothing.

Most of the time I use aperture priority "A" mode, never AUTO mode. If you are in AFS mode (Auto Focus Single) the camera won't take a picture if it can't auto focus. As an example, if you try to take a picture of a blank wall,
it can't auto focus, and it won't take the picture. If it is in AFC (Auto Focus Continuous) the camera will take a picture if it can auto focus or not. For most photography, you should be in AFS mode, only use AFC mode for sports, or taking pictures of moving objects.
