I've got a Mazda 5-spd in a '90 Ranger laying all over my workbench. I started out chasing a "rattly" noise it had while above 5-10mph. I got it fully disassembled but don't really see anything wrong. I'm planning on replacing bearings and put it back together....I guess.
There are taper bearings on input and output shafts, and a needle bearing between the shafts. Is the spacer on the input shaft bearing a selectable shim also or how do you know how much "play" there should be for the needle bearing. This directly affects how "loose" the input shaft is. How much "play" should the input shaft have?

this isnt an answer to your question, sorry.
while you have the transmission disassembled what is the spline count on the input shaft, the diameter of the end that sets inside the pilot bearing, and the length from the transmission face to the end of the shaft?

as to the chattering i think mine does the same thing when the transmission isnt under load, it also did it while the transmission was in neutral, best guess is replace the synchronizing rings

Sorry dude, I'm not in the position to measure that right now as tranny is in different location than I am with measuring equipment.

Still need help, come on people!!!

Any help would be appreciated as this is new territory for me. I don't want to have to put an automatic in this thing. No offense to auto's, but I've grown kinda fond of changing clutches and slave cylinders, hehehe.........
