View Full Version : Bug body + Bronco II frame
A friend and I were talking earlier, then started looking on craigslist... Anyway we decided it would be a good idea to put an old bug body on a bronco II frame. So we're going to look at a 86 bronco II that won't turn onver for $225...And we have our eyes on a old non running bug with good pans for $100.
We're thinking stock suspension with 33's...
What do you guys think? We think it's cool, but can you think of any problems... I'll keep you posted with what's up.

Back when I had my bug, I used to read all the VW mags, and some company had a fiberglass splitwindow body that would bolt right up to a heep chassis.

Several forum versions ago someone put a bug body on a BII frame, they said the wheelbase was the same (or close enough) between the two. They cut the floor out of each and used most of the BII floorpan to mount a minimal amount of the bug floorpan to so all the body mounts would stay the same.

yea, I've seen a yellow one before...looked pretty cool...
I checked, the bug has a .5" longer wheel base so it'll work real well. Plus we'll be using baja fenders so that makes clearance a lot easier.
That's a good idea to use the BII floorpan. We were planning on making custom mounts and possibly incorporating a sort of progressive body lift if needed to accommodate for the rise in the frame towards the front.
We picked up the bronco today for $200. It had a bad starter solenoid and some funky electrical. Its an 86 Eddia Bauer with the 2.8 and a 5spd with 3.73 L/S. Its almost 100% straight and rust free. One hell of a deal.

If it has a 2.8 from the factory it is an '85, and yours does have a 2.8. Now 20+ years later it is hard to guess who swapped what for what reason however.
That is a nice find, that would make a great dd/wheeler as it is, I hope there are no VW plans with this truck???
Yeah, I was wrong, its an 85. And that will be the one we use with the VW. The body will probably stay mostly, if not completely intact though, so maybe somebody else could get some use from it...
Its also got some kind of funky electrical....wipers will come on, but not shut off, blinker worked, but now don't and neither do the brake lights.... So we'll be keeping the bug's electrical for all that.

Word of warning, VW's have fairly weird wiring setups. My brother has a '68, the windshield washer pump is driven by the spare tire pressure (tire is kept in the front) from the factory and strange stuff like that. They also have a pathetic heating system that runs air thru heat exchangers and attempts to pump it into the passenger compartment, I don't know how you would get a RBV heating system to work with this setup if you wanted to.
I would also Duraspark that 2.8, it would really simplify things up there as your engine compartment will be getting alot smaller. Keeping it cool will be something else to work out, VWs are aircooled with the engine in the rear so there is no way for air to get thru the front for your 2.8.
Aside from outside looks a BII is a much better 4x4, longer doors with more glass area and a lower beltline make them easier to get in and see what is going on, more room in the back for either passengers or cargo and soforth. Bugs are a nice car, reliable as a hammer and get good milage (bro gets 45+ with his) but they are borderline claustraphobic for me driving around in one, I can't imagine trying to wheel one at low speed and keep track of what all is going on around it.
Just some thoughts I had, my bro had a magizine that someone plopped a 460 in their bug for a drag car, so about anything is possible with them. If it was a typical $200 BII I would say go for it, but heck if you fix the lights and wipers you could probably get a grand pretty easy out of it right now.
We are planning on having a rear mounted radiator, where the engine used to be, since that area is already set up to draw air into it. It will also have electric fans. The friend Im doing this with had a baja, and they're not too bad to wheel in, and I'm 6'4". We've looked at some bugs in local junkyards, and there actually seems to be quite a bit of room up front... We'll deal with a lot of these issues when ewe come to them.
We got the body pulled off tonight in just over 2 hrs, and the frame rolled back into the shop. We spent most of the day trying to track down a VW pan and body. We've got a lead on one, with a bunch of baja goodies on it for $450. We may look at it tomorrow. I have pictures, but photobucket sucks usual so not right now.

That will look awesome sitting in the air
Yeah, we had the bug sitting next to the chassis, and just buy putting it on the frame, it will be getting more than a foot of lift... With the 33's on it, it should be about as tall as I am, and I'm 6'4". People will think something is odd because of how tall it is, then will start to see what it really is.

We got the rear frame trimmed, and got rid of the rear crossmember/tank mount. We replaced it with a 3x3 tube about a foot forward. Then we got the Baja style bumper mounted We also cut the front frame about 15 in and capped it off. There's pics....later.

whats the specs on the sandrail in the background? those things are a blast to take out into the woods.
Do you mean the go-cart? I dunno really. It has a tecumseh on it now. We're adding 3-wheeler front shocks to the rear and probably a dirtbike engine since we destroyed the torque converter from jumping it.

We haven't been doin much work to it, we've been doing 'real' work. A friend started filling in the holes below the windows for the trim, and some of the floor framing is in. We still need to get some sheet metal for the floor though. We're gonna pick up some 32x11.5 BFG M/Ts, some aluminum for the custom dash, and some XJ springs for the front.
Toreadorranger
09-15-2007, 07:15 PM
defidently dont use the TTB springs. that yellow BroncoBug has them and it rides like a freakin brick.
That's good to know. As soon as the body was off the frame, we saw the positive camber and knew something needed to change. If we want we could pick up some TJ springs too, apparently they are softer than even the XJ springs, but that might be too soft.

depends who they are from, most jeep places springs are the same for the XJ and TJ

another thing is the interior, which one are you going to use?
The yellow bug has the Bronco dash cut down in it. He then used the seats front and rear out of a eclipse. The 4 seats fit really good.
We'll make a custom one. A custom dash i think, we'll have to move the seats back a bit since we have to move the pedals back from the stock bug location because the engine is there. We'll have a rear seat, lower than stock location so there will be plenty of headroom. We may use the bronco speedo, Im not sure. We'll decide when we get there.
Both sets of springs are stock, not aftermarket. We'll grab the TJ coils if we can get them for free, otherwise I think we'll just stick with the XJ ones, because we don't want to go too soft.
We've been working on it when we get the chance which has been rare recently. We picked up a set of Cherokee Sport coils that were much longer than stock. They lifted the front a couple inches so we cut one full coil off each spring and it sits pretty good now and is MUCH softer. We need longer shocks on the front now though. Out back we pulled apart the leaf packs and removed the tiny bottom leaf and the 3rd leaf from the top so now the packs have 3 leafs each. We also put in 1" blocks since it had none, and got a slight lift from those and it too is much softer. We are preparing to pull the tranny and replace the clutch, fab up the floor/firewall, and put the body back on the frame. We also picked up some Mitsu seats from the junkyard for it.

09-27-2007, 07:55 PM
you removed the overload? not the best Idea unless you are going to replace it with something, you can cause the springs to crack and the perch doing this.
That's the overload? It didn't look like one to me... It was just a little tiny spring about 12" and just as thin as all the others.
Ok, we got some sheet metal... finally. So work on the floor has begun. I'll keep this updated.

Drof,
Hows the Bugonco project going!? I myself wanna start building one also, I have a 1984 Bronco 2 and I have a '57 oval window already off the pan. Are you putting your bug on the bronco pan or are putting the bug body on the bronco frame and building your own floor and mounts? Any advise I will appreciate! I figure you already jumped alot of hurdles that you already knocked down. Can't wait to see some more pictures. I'm gonna build mine in hopes to start participating in some VORRA Class 5 unlimited or Class 7 Races here in Nevada.
Thanx for you time,
Bill

A Friend of mine has a VW Bug with a Corvette LS1 engine in it, it's sitting on a s10 frame, they had to put BMW grills in the hood to let cool air in, also has PT Cruiser tail lights, and newer Beetle head lights.

Hey Bill Sorry it took me a few weeks to get back to ya, I am sadly having to sale me Bug Bronco we are having a Baby and so it has not gotten any progress made to it past what is seen in the pictures here I was planning on setting the bug on the bronco pan but I would advise against that just throw the bug on the frame and build your floor much easier!! one other thing I would do Bill is get a newer bronco II to play with for the Fuel injection aspect that is what I have..

Drof,
Congrats on your new baby! I was gonna say don't let the kid stop ya! Your gonna need some self time and the Bugonco project will wait for ya, jus now your gonna have to put the $$ in for diapers and stuff. Glad you decided not to sell the Bugonco project. Anyway, my '84 already has a Rough Country lift kit in it, and a Offy manifold w/ a 4 bbl on it. Future project on the '84 is going to change ring and pinions and put in some lockers., but 1st I really wanna put the bug body on it. Thanx for your advise! after studying the 2 together I decided to do just as you said. I havn't really started on that project yet cause I'm helping my son build a Class 5 baja bug now. Hopefully will have it done for the next local race. When I finally start my Bugonco project I will post pictures for ya to see.
Take care, and I believe a BUGONCO will be a GREAT 1st vehicle for your kid!
Bill
