Hey guys its time to order a locker my new 31 spline sploder 8.8 i'm putting in the ranger. I've been tossing up weather to get a selectable for the rear or not. I'm either looking at the Detroit locker or the Auburn Ected. Some people say the Ected slips, others say they don't, including the place I would be ordering mine from. They said they've been selling them for 5 years without any problems. Thats the one thing that I like about the Detroit, its 100% traction all the time and I know they have a proven track record. Thought? Opinions?

if u want to make sure it doesnt fail then id run the detroit, there is no question of whether it is going to work or slip, with the other one u will always have the thought in the back of ur mind(i hope it doesnt slip)

They tell you that because they're trying to sell you one.

The ECTED is NOT a locker (regardless of how it's being marketed), there are NO lock pins, splined clutches/gears or any other form of positive engagement inside it.
What it has is a ball-ramp mechanism that (when engaged) simply compresses the L/S clutches harder with more pressure. It'll still slip under the conditions you most need it not to. As the clutches wear, I would think the clamping pressure will become less over time as well.

If you want selectable, go with the ARB or OX. They have by far the simplest designs. Automatic, Detroit Locker.

I recommend an ARB or similar selectable locker as well. A limited-slip will always slip when you need it most.

And as far as lunchbox lockers go, I'd stay away from them. I installed a Lockrite in my 8.8 when I built it and I wish I had gone ARB. The clicking, popping, and excessive backlash are annoying. Ok for the front but not the rear.

I don't hear anything out of mine, the ocasional pop, the backlash is the only downside for me but I've gotten used to it.

I just removed a lockright from my old 8.8. It worked perfectly and I had no complaints about or how it worked, but i'm getting into bigger tires and harder terrain now so I want a full carrier locker. Looks like Detroit it is.

Another option is the eaton e-locker which is what I have. I dont have it installed yet but it is a true locker when activated unlike the ected.

I mean, they're not bad, I just wish I had spent the extra money for an ARB, since I was setting up gears anyway.

My biggest problem occurs in 1st gear double lo, when the excessive backlash will cause the truck to lurch uncontrollably sometimes. It even does it in single low occasionally. Also, when I go around a sharp corner and let off the gas the locker will suddenly engage.

I think the lunchbox type lockers might work more smoothly with an automatic transmission.

i dunno....i am done with arb's

e locker or electrac is what i am using next...though i been wondering about the ox too.

the way they look to me the unit actually locks when maxed, cause the balls have seats on the side gear, though alot of slippage is reported, i have not seen it yet.

If you are that serious and meticulous about it on the trail, just spool it....way cheaper...and I guarantee it won't unlock....lol..

I've got a Detroit locker, install kit and crush sleeve eliminator on its way as we speak. I just couldn't bring myself to trust the Ected.

I just picked up a set of axles with the Ected lockers front & back. I'll let ya know how they perform once I throw'em under the truck!

+1

I had my front and rear welded, and the only reason I went to lockers is that I moved and the trails went from being 5 minutes away to 2-4 hours away.

Yo,
I have heard that Eaton's e-locker is designed differently than auburns. Instead of tightening clutch packs, the electro-magnet engages pins that hold the axle locked.

Yup, that is how the elocker works

Just for the hell of it. D35 in this B2 has an ECTED (Rear 8.8 has a No-Slip) and he has since sold it for and Aussie locker.

Yeah, I believe he said he took it apart before and nothing inside was wrong with it.

I've watched "locked" ecteds unload wheeling and slip one tire. Not worth the money.
