Anyone know or have a wiring diagram of what needs to be done to make a 4.0 starter work in my '86 BII? I am swapping in a M50D-R1 and will have to use the 4.0 clutch and starter.

If it's like my '90, you need to run the power cable directly to the battery (hot all the time), then run a wire from the stock solenoid (on the fender) to the solenoid on the starter to engage it.

Do you know what size wire to go from the starter relay to the starter solenoid? I am ordering wire today so I have it for this weekend when I do the swap.

Overdoing it just means a little more effort to solder.
4AWG is probably fine, but there is so little down-side to using 2AWG or even 0AWG that I'd suggest just finding the largest you can.
You'll probably end up making that cable; I don't think anyone sells one long enough. It has to go all the way from the starter relay (or battery) under the oil pan to the furthest part of the engine.
Like all RBV starters, this one grounds through the transmission and engine block. This is probably the limiting factor for current draw.
I'd suggest this is a good time to work over the ground-side battery cable as well.

Thanks. I am going to order the 4AWG since it is $1.00 cheaper per foot. I plan on reworking the negative also. I need to find where it attaches on my BII. I am going to use 4AWG on it as well.

For the relay to solenoid, almost anything will work (I doubt it carries even an amp). #14 or #16 should be fine.
So it is a trigger wire that goes on the relay (on the same side as my present starter wire correct?)

it goes where your starter wire is now, your starter wire will then be always hot.
i set mine up so that the original relay is still tripped by the original starter circuit. the lead that goes to the solenoid on the starter connects to the switched side of the relay on the fender. the power wire for the starter connects to the always hot side of the relay on the fender. i *think* this is the same way junkie did his. if you need a pic of my setup, just ask

the bottom terminal on the solenoid is always hot. it ties the battery, starter and power distribution block together. you will have a bunch of fusible links there instead of the power distribution block. the top terminal is the signal wire for the solenoid on the starter. the far left terminal is the original signal wire to trip the original starter relay.

Why not just jumper the starter solenoid batt terminal to the solenoid coil, and run one cable from the fender relay per the stock setup/diagram? Then the cable will only be hot when the starter is being used. Much simpler. shady
