ok well im new to off roading and my truck is a 94 b3000 4x4 3L and im not sure what 4wd i should use when off roading ?? or does it matter on what the conditions are that im driving in i went out today to some hydro lines and i just drove in 4H cuz i never got out of 1st gear (truck is standard) cuz im goin slow so and 4H worked fine but it bogged a little when i hit the bigger puddles ??

ok, got it
-2H 2 Wheel Drive At High Speed For Normal Driving
-4H 4 Wheel Drive At High Speed For Driving On An Unpaved, Sandy Or Snowy Road
-4L 4 Wheel Drive At Low Speed, This Shift Position Is Particularly Useful
When Maximum Traction Is Required
Hope This Helps,
Jeff

i only use 4h when im driveing on a snowy road,or in sand dunes, when im wheeling its in 4l, if u want to go alil faster shift in to 2nd.

since the 3.0 isnt exactly a torque monster, i almost always use 4-low...the extra gearing helps keep the motor from bogging, and makes the truck more controllable (slower) while navigating difficult obstacles.
4h and 4l have nothing to do with "traction". 4-low is exactly what its name implies....its a lower gear. think about it like this: if you could shift down from 2nd gear to 1st, then shift down again from 1st to a lower gear...that would be 4 low.
of coarse since the deeper gearing comes from your transfer case rather than the transmission, you can still use all 5 speeds and revers while in 4-low.

I like the old saying about 4wd drives only good for getting stuck farther away from home...

ok cool thanks for all the help
ya when i re read all the post i realized that when i was goin thorugh a deep long puddle i was in first in 4H and my truck allmost bogged out but i luckly got to the other side to get more grip to get out so in 4L i have just a slowwer crawl speed so i can get throught like deeper stuff is somewaht what ur saying

yeah thats why u just shift to a higher gear, normally when i cant stand goin slow, or theres a long strecht i will use like 3rd or 4th gear, when ur snow wheelin though alot of ppl use 4lo in high gears

i use 4LO to crawl and shit but when im stuck I have MUCH beter chances of spinning and gettin it out in 4HI. but i learned the hard way not to spin and jus get a winch :(
