I have two Dana axles. The rear is a Dana 60. No question. Says '60' right on the webing.

The other axle is a front axle and has the same diff cover. I can't find the 2-digit number on it. On the webs I find:

620093 (with what appears to be an 'R' at the end)

NC (in a triangle)

and.......

243

I tried running the 620093 as a BOM number but didn't get anything.

Anyone have any ideas? :icon_confused:

620-0093?

That's the number for a brothel down in Hacienth parrish Lousiana.

In Dana's catalog I see the 620094 (pinion) and 620095 (ring) as the ring and pinion part numbers for a 3:54 ratio in a Dana 60 axle. I'm guessing the 620093 is the housing part number.

Ya, that's kind of what I'm thinking.....

Have you looked on the axletube itself for any numbers? (BOM #s are usually stamped into the tube on straight axles).

No. I saw the number and recognized it as a BOM, but didn't think about it being for the housing. I knew the BOM's were on the tube but completely forgot. I guess when I saw that number it threw me off and my brain stopped there.

Better late then never? I have the same number on the corner of my D60 front axle pumpkin.... currently on the 90 f350 diesel 4x4 truck.. 3.55 gears open the BOM is on the long tube.. mine was 610313 1RC 3.55 gear open diff.. wishing in twas trac loc.. not sure if I want it to be 4.11's or not? Considering I might go diesel eventually on the truck I'm putting the axles in..

*EDIT: THIS THREAD IS OVER A YEAR OLD, FYI.. oh well..

I believe they're rare, but there's a chance it's a Dana 61?

From my net wanderings I'm told they're almost identical to a Dana 60, but not quite, and many parts don't interchange. I believe they came in front axles.

With mileage and emissions concerns rising, at some point Dodge and / or Ford decided they wanted to be able to offer gears higher than the current highest ratio of 3.54 available in the D60. However, because of the design of the D60 the pinion head could not be made big enough to achieve a higher ratio. Hence, the birth of the Dana 61, which has a different casting that moves the pinion over 0.25"-0.437" (conflicting reports) - this allowed for a 3.07 axle ratio. The Dana 61 also uses 3.5" axle tubes. Other than that, it is very similar to the Dana 60. The Dana 61 was common in Dodge front ends and Ford van rears.

The difficulty with the Dana 61 is very limited gear and locker choices. However, you can use a combination of ring gear spacer and thick gear set to allow the use of differentials and gear sets intended for the Dana 60.

Slagburn reports: to run a 4.88 I had to go with series 3 carrier, series 1 being 4.10 and down, series 2 being 4.56 and up, then the series 3. PLUS a .160" spacer. That's the problem, nobody makes a full case locker for a 61, but it could be doable with a thick ring gearset AND a spacer.

Reider racing< Randy's R&P, and other sources make ring gear spacers for the Dana 61 .
