heep cherokee anti-lock brake problem

My uncle wanted me to ask you guys if anyone knew what might be going on with his 2002 heep cherokee. He said one of 2 things happens. He will start it up and the anti-lock brake light comes on and the antilock doesn't work or sometimes the light will stay off and the anti-lock works but every once in awhile the light comes on and goes off . It's not rapid back and forth like a bad connection it just comes and goes. sometimes they work, sometimes that don't, any ideas?
