View Full Version : Fixing up my extended cab..(wheels are painted)
Some of you know I already painted and customized my '92 Extended cab Ranger nearly 4 years ago. Heres what it looked like in its prime..
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/7075/rock002ir8.jpg
It started to rust, welds started to crack, slave cylinder was going...and I just wasn't happy with the paint job/bodywork I did when I was only 17.
I picked up a new bed in August '06 (this is a current picture, I haven't done jack to it)
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/3919/newbedkb7.jpg
Bought a new core support, and stole the lower a-pillar and inner fender from my buddies truck that got wrecked, because mine were damaged from a previous accident. I also stole the door and fender to replace the cheap chinese made crap that was on my truck.
old..

Its called a Superdome, I bought it for $20 from a kid at Wyotech back in March of '06.
Heres the touched up bodywork..also did some sandblasting on some rust that was forming.

I am going to do something like that this fall, I have rust starting down at the bottom of the doorwell where yours is shiny. Trying to figure out how to sandblast it and not fill the interior with sand, I also think I need to reseal the gutter seam above the door. It won't get totally repainted for awhile yet, this is just to keep it in decent shape for when I get enough stuff rounded up to redo it (doors, bed, fenders and hood) The powertrain is my main priority, but my fairly rust free cab is jumping ahead in line for abit.
Are you staying with the same color? That is a nice color for a street truck.

That's gonna look pretty slick in that two tone sceme you've got going. Just my opinion, but I think that pin stripe might look better in some shade of silver. Either way it's goona be a bitchin street rig.

how much would you charge for a complete paint job?
how much would you charge for a complete paint job?
that depends on what kind of work needs done.
Some more work done....boy I wish I had been this motivated 6 months ago.
Sandblasted, epoxy primed, and seam sealed some almost mint '86 Bronco II doors I just happened to have. Just have to make my mirror mounts and I'll be able to cut em in and get them mounted.

seen it done and I really don't like how it looks on an extended cab, it makes the roof look too high.
crap, now I'm forced to pull the windshield..it has a chip anyway but I wanted to hold off for a while. Previous owner had packed it with bondo, no wonder it leaked

Do your BII doors have the wing windows? I had a cherry set with wings I put on my ranger I guess I am old school, I just like the wings. Keep the pics coming.
No they're the one piece glass. I'm putting third gen mirrors on it anyway though so the wing window woulda been a waste.

I got my windshield cutter today. I got the windshield out quicker than I got the slider out, the hacks that worked on this truck before put the sucker back in with butyl (for those of you who don't know manufacturers haven't used butyl since the 70s.) No wonder it leaked right above the rearview mirror.

Have you looked into a sliver bottom to go w/ the black top, or vice-versa???

I would personally reverse the colours, green top and black bottom. I know what you're saying about keeping some of it "stock". Mines the same way.

I did a poll on it when I first came up with the scheme about a year and a half ago, 99% of everyone said black on top. Dunno, I just like the darker color on top, seems to be how most two-tone jobs are.

Hey Zman, You are going to have a lot of hours in that truck, but it will look good after you get done. I know because I've been doing body work/painting for 18 years and know what it takes to do restoration work. I like the two tone with the black on top, but I don't like the black wheels, just my two cents.
Well I figured out that I get alot more stuff done when I'm working at someone elses house. So since I don't have any room in my shop anyway, I took my bed over to my Uncle's house. His shop is heated too so that makes it even nicer! I'll have some pics on Sunday..

I was going to do this when i put new doors on my truck with 93ish taurus mirrors. But i decided not to because of what happend with my origonal big mirrors.
They were the big ones with the aluminum frame that bolts on half way down the door and up at the top. tried to get into a tight parking spot and snapped it off when i was backing out. So now i like the little ones that can tuck in.

Thanks! Ya heat is definitely nice. We put in a double barrel wood burner earlier this winter, and while it does get warm, our shop still isn't full insulated so it doesn't get as warm as it could, its just too damn big (30x30 steel) to heat efficiently untill we get it all insulated.

that must have been a tight spot! I've squeezed my buick in some tight spaces, and its definitely harder to park than either of my rangers.

Not really anymore but yours is an exception. Just goes to show when you have good bodywork/fab skills the craftsmanship shows. Good work!

I haven't come up with a good solution for that yet to be honest. I think I'm just gonna glue some black felt to it.
some pics from today that my cousin snapped for me.
Got the tailgate aligned, which I spent alot of time on! Opens perfectly, which I never bothered to do when the truck was together lol. Turns out the right bedside was replaced at one time, also someone had done some work to the left side, and had way more mud in it than they needed, and had also drilled a bunch of holes :/ ..

is the areostar door for a second gas tank?you probably don't need to worry about it on a ranger thats not a work truck but you might weld up the seam on the top of the bed rail where the bedside meets the front bed panel so it doesn't pull apart or start cracking.the last ranger i did i used fiber fill on the tops of the bed rails since it holds up better to abuse.its a pain to sand compared to regular filler but is much tougher.one last question,is that one of the cheap stud guns? i see you have the good box of studs but does the cheap gun work well?

ya, its a $50 Harbor Freight special, lovenly known as the stud wedler.

Works fine, doesn't have quite as much power as a good one, have to hold the button a little longer. The slide hammer that comes with it kinda sucks too, but I deal with it. Overall it was worth the $50.
Thanks for the advice on the bedsides, I noticed on my old bed that is moves alot there and started to rust, so I'll go ahead and weld it up. As far as filler I like to skim over welds with All-metal, then I use Rage gold and USC icing.
The gas door is for the only gas tank. I took out the 19.5 gallon front tank and am just running a stock rear tank from a dual tank Ranger. Having to fill up every 200-250 miles doesn't bother me THAT much.

All-metal is a reinforced filler, it has aluminum shavings in it. even with 36 grit its a bitch to hand-sand, I usually knock it down with a DA.
I'm going with a rear tank because someday I would like to put airride on the truck, and the stock tank would be in the way. I also wanted full use of the inside of my bed, so I figured a stock tank in the stock location from a dual tank ranger would be the best bet, plus the easiest to hook up. lets just hope my sending unit never fails, as new ones are not available. Though there is a place around here that rebuilds them.

So other than the bodywork, what else do you need to finally finish this truck? Any other mods? Using factory tail lights/head lights? What else?

just body work for now. technically using stock lights, the rears are full clear taillights (not altezza) that I'm going to paint candy red, and the fronts are the euros I have. Need to finish the front bumper also, which has the plate frenched in like my tailgate.

seen 2 total in person. 1 was that S-10 I posted, 1 was a first gen standard cab Ranger I saw at Summit Racing last summer. One other guy had one on RPS, he bought it back in like '89 for his 88 Ranger. So far I haven't seen an extended cab with one. Apparently the Superdome company just had poor marketing. Its a great product, from what I've been told the model I have (velcro straps secure it) doesn't leak a drop when it rains. Guess they just didn't have their name out there that well.

there are no updates! Haven't really done anything since June when I primed the bed. While its warm this week I am going to finish up redoing the mud work on the tailgate and get it in primer. Then hopefully my friend can spray the backside of it with Rhinoliner.

someday. Still undecided whether or not I want to bag the truck. If I decide to bag, then it will be after that.

You need to post more pictures on teh tail gate handle relocation. I'm looking to do one but have never seen pictures of how it's done. I've heard guys explaining how easy it is and what to cut. Just want to make sure I understand it.
Thanks Lee

I just bought a kit from sir michaels, apparently its not available anymore though...
Mar-K sells a better kit anyway.. www.mar-k.com
Just an update...I put the dash back in Saturday. Today I tried to finish my gas lines up but I have a leak, need to get some different parts tomorrow to take care of that. Fuel pump pumps (had to hit it with a hammer to free it up though, it was a seized from sitting). But it cranks and should run once I take care of the lines. Hooray.
After I get it running I have to pull it outside and use a come-along to pull the core support over a 1/2" or so. I have the hood latch adjusted all the way to the right but it still drags the hood over slightly when it latches, no big deal.
Since I've never posted a picture of the rear gas tank, here it is all hooked up.

My guages are a little funky, I think I have a bad ground in the engine bay. Also, 1st gen sending units don't read correctly with 2nd gen electrics, I only have about a gallon in the tank.

My rhinolined tailgate, friend of mine did it for a hell of a deal back in January.

Well, a few friends (Combs_Customs, fordguy64, and another friend) came up this weekend and helped me a bit with my truck.
Wilton (Combs_Customs) and Rob (fordguy64) installed my l/s and new ford racing 3.55 gears. In exchange I made a shaved tailgate and installed a rollpan on Wiltons Ranger. I forgot to snap a final picture of the tailgate and rollpan! Oops. I'm sure Wilton will get one for me. We also flipped my shackles back over to stock, when the axle goes back in its going in with a flip kit to level the truck out.

unfortunately those clear gearz covers aren't as strong as they advertise, you can't really see it, but this cracked in a bunch of places. Just normal street driving, 12k miles.

Have to get you a pic in a day or two. Got the plate light wired up. It looks sweet. I am going to grind a little more off that lip on the bottom of the gate, it barely rubs the rollpan, but it took paint off. And yay, it still starts :yahoo:
welp, other than my rear calipers...I've got everything I need to put on my Cobra disc brakes!

started putting my rear discs on. Just need bolts for the calipers. I had to notch the caliper mounts so that I could bolt them do the backside of the flange. I also flipped them from left to right.

Well I'll add tie-down points to the inside of the bed so I can at least take my motorycle somewhere if I need to. It looks a lot better without the stake pockets.

Ok I get it. I guess me being in construction the inside tiedowns piss me off when I gotta fill up the bed with moldy asbestos drywall and make a landfill trip. It will work well for you and looks clean:headbang::headbang:

just curious why didnt you swap in an explorer rear if youre switching to discs and doing a flip kit on it anyhow? great work otherwise!
just curious why didnt you swap in an explorer rear if youre switching to discs and doing a flip kit on it anyhow? great work otherwise!
2 reasons.. 1. Because I'm using Mustang brakes. These Rotors are 11.6" and vented, and have an integrated parking brake in the caliper. 2. An Explorer axle is 3" wider than my axle, I don't want to run into clearance issues with my wheels/tires. I'm going with 13" Cobra parts up front, so I want the rear to be equally as beefy.
Heres an update, got my windshield in a couple of weeks ago, figured it was time, since its been ready for months, lol.

Red on the bead, it has pearl in it but you can't really tell.

I sprayed the silver on the inserts, but it was not cooperating. I let it dry overnight, and it still peeled off when I tried to tape it.
http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1311/3101/3276550396_large.jpg
So I just sprayed them completely black..

http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1311/3101/3276550392_large.jpg
What do you guys think? Should I still spray the inserts silver, or should I just leave them black?

I would keep the black/red combo on the rims. That will look better and look different from what others have out there. You been working on this Ranger for along time now. Any idea when it will be done???
