that looks perfectly safe. i bet they come with this warning "Warning: Not for highway use." plus that takes the fun out of having the front end hop.

I don't know what to think about that.
It's sort of doing what a equalizer hitch does. But it doesn't have brakes on it. So if you have 1,500# loaded on that thing out of a 10,000# total load, you still have 10,000# of load to stop and 1,500# of traction weight missing when you do it.
Besides that, I don't see much bad about it really. It just seems half-assed.
I'm not getting one.

So you know those parking lot entrances where its possible to scrape your hitch on the ground?
What happens when you go there with one of those?
Might be better actually--just let the wheels keep it from scraping. Some RVs have those. I've had the ball plucked out of the socket before when the trailer bottomed--which I why I use a pintle/lunette now.

seems like it should work, but seems like a bit of a band-aid.
will, i wouldnt think there would be a noticeable effect on braking since weight shift will remove most of the weight from the wheel under braking anyway.

I know what will happen... Your back wheels will lose contact with the ground and your overloaded truck will now be stuck halfway in the intersection wheels spinning like mad.
If your lucky your driving a 4WD.
Good point.
But it won't unload very much. It's still an unbraked axle.

like when you were little and the training wheels on your bike would hold the rear tire off the ground....i always hated that

For the person who wants a fifth wheel trailer and decided, like a fool, to buy an explorer instead of a one ton truck.

And I went and bought a F-350 dually for hauling heavy loads. CRAP for 17000 dollars less I could have pulled anything with my old 3/4 ton........

You could have forgotten the 3/4 ton and just used your Ranger.

Back in the fiftys lots of house trailers had a similiar wheel thingy under the tongue.. Back then house trailers were pulled mostly with automobiles and the back springs couldn't take the load.

This is the same thing, just came with the trailer. I guess this is from back when you used a car for everything.

You sure Will? It sure looks like a tow dolly under the front of that thing and not a fifth wheel attachment.
A tow dolly is a 5th wheel. So is that. There's a kingpin in the center of the axle and the hitch and wheels move as a unit, rotating under the trailer above. It's the same exact reasoning--using an extra set of tires to support a load that you don't want on your tow vehicle.

Hey come on now guys these ideas are not so bad. I am thinking of adding a 4 cyl diesel bio fueled engine to that toad one and save the ranger engine. 40 MPG while towing! OOOh yeah!

The tow dollies we sell at work are a newer design.
The platform stays still and the wheels turn and are connected with a tie-rod similar to a solid axle vehicle.
When not towing they give you a pin to lock the wheels straight, otherwise the dolly likes to jump over to the next lane.

my thoughts are it would take weight off of the axles that not only power the truck, but also have brakes. If this thingy does not have brakes, it is going to degrade the vehicles stopping power.
half assed is a good assessment of it.

EXACTLY just a quick fix for short distances, anyone who buys a trailer and needs that because the truck cant handle doesnt [I]really[I] use it anyways the real hardcore traielr draggers have equipment that can handle it or jsut drag it bottomed out. Kinda like the magnet ring for your oil filter that increasses HP or the turbonator for the intake LOL

This appears to me to be an excellent safety device thats badly needed to confront the problem of irresponsible drivers with small towing vehicles [cars, pickups and 4x4s] being hooked up to trailers that are too large, badly overloaded, or stupid to tackle with the towing vehicle they have. It's an ideal device for men who like taking chances, who like adding that extra ton of goods, or who blatantly ignore their tow vehicle or trailers makers maximum gross weight & towing advice.
If you have a crash for any of the reasons given above; it could cost you a fortune, bang goes your car, your trailer, your load and what about yourself, or your familys safety, and if your trailers carrying horses and livestock, they too can get seriously hurt and might need to be humanely destroyed. If I was "an horse", I'd argue shoot the driver, and so would many people of common-sense. If you know your the sort of person who should have one of these devices then get one [drop hints your overdue a birthday present or gift] StingerHitches tackle a huge problem and might just save your childs life, a pedestrian or passer-bys life. I can see this device become law in every State and in the UK. A Limey Farmer, Leeds, UK.

Driving overloaded is bad enough. But to then throw a bunch of that weight onto undersized wheels with no brakes that are not held in firm alignment with the rest of the suspension while simultaneously taking weight off the axle with the highest load capacity, service brakes, and engine braking seems like a bad plan. Not to mention you're moving the actual hitch connection that much further back, leveraging control away from the tow vehicle even more.
How will it behave when one of those rinky-dink tires pops because the same genius that decided to profoundly overload his rig also decided to drive 80mph? Almost instantly throw a few hunded pounds more weight on the hitch, pull the steer axle off the ground, and probably kick the hitch sideways with enough force even a competent driver would have a hard tme staying on the road.
I'd rather let the idiots drag their bumpers on the ground--at least it'll slow them down.

my taurus could use one, it looks like im loaded with brick with the saggy rear struy suspention. my trailer hitch bangs off speedbumps it so low in the back. forget about trailer towing with it, its just a good support for jackstands.

I could see that having it's advantages for someone who has to go no more than a couple of miles such as for farmers or on a large industrial complex, but it really should be illegal to use one on the highway. Even if the thing had electric brakes it still can't compare to the stopping power from your truck that you would be losing from loss of traction.

I think its not so bad. Could be drastically improved tho. Like the addition of either surge brakes or electric brakes added to the extra wheels.
I would rather build one and ad surge brakes to it. I would consider it safe then.

I agree with the poster that said they would get air bags.. I don't know what airbags go for but they cant be that much more than this hitch. As other say I could see it useful on a farm or maybe around town not going to far/fast but I would be scared of trying to drive it on the hwy.. Like wiked said it is really just a "band-aid"
