i just noticed today that my steering box is leaking pretty good. what it my choices, is there anywhere to get seals for it? and if so is it worth it or is it gonna leak in a month again anyway? its a 94 supercab 4wd
 
i would get a new one....
 
any auto parts store should carry them...
 
that gets pricey as hell, just find one from a junkyard thats tight and doesnt leak

you think thats worth it? i never had one leak on me, is it common? its only the pitman arm seal and i seen on rock auto they sell the seal for around $5, is it worth just changing the seal?
 
You can change the seal, however you will need a pitman arm puller to get the pitman arm off.

i got one of them, i ws just wondering if anyone had good luck when replacing them and having them last or does the casting that the seal sits in get all tore up and make the new seal leak?
 
my power steering gear box was leaking to and my dads so it pretty common
we both changed the gearbox

No, the casting survives this just fine. The issue is that the bearing and/or sector shaft wears. If you have to buy a new sector shaft, it's cheaper just to get a reman gear.
 
I had a pretty bad leak a few years ago, from the seal above the pitman arm. I put some stop leak in. After a week or so it sealed right up, and it's still tight as a drum years later. And it's used to turn 35s on a locked axle.

Not saying PS stop leak will work in your case, but it worked great for me.
 
really? i guess its worth shot, i just had to refill it again this morning. i never really believed in that kind of stuff but its worth a try
 
I'd try to replace that seal with the box still installed.

It's easier to pull the pitman arm with the box installed anyway.

For a $5 seal, I'd sure try it.

I just did a different seal on a 76 F150 (same basic box) but it was under the cover holding the gearlash adjustment. WAY too much work to pull the box off, just to replace that seal.

Pretty sure I found an exploded view on one of the auto parts store websites. Or else at a steering gear website. I know for a fact NAPA had a seal kit for ~$40.

I'd sure try for the $5 fix vs. $180 or so for the steering box.





old fart whine/ Besides, that box weighs 47 lbs - NOT FUN when working alone getting those bolts back in / old fart whine complete
 
And a 47 lb sledgehammer is very unpleasant when you drop it on yourself. BTDT. Had an X-ray flipping the bird to everyone (wanna guess where it landed?).
