Ranchero 9" rear

does any one know the with of a 9" out of a 77 Ranchero? im wanting to upgrade the axles in my 84 bronco II but wasnt sure if the 9" would be stronger then a 8.8 swap. this bronco II is currantly stock

a 9" isn't too much stronger then an 8.8".

The only reason I could see to just swap a 9" in is to match a dana44

the main reason for a Ranchero 9" was there the same bolt pattern as a dana 35 TTB, and i like being differnt

actually, the 9" rear end is CONSIDERABLY stronger then that of a 8.8 and all 9" axles are full floaters. it really is VERY convienient, and in a wheeler it is ideal for ease of changing axles out.

Not when comparing STOCK axles (perhaps with an exception for the carrier itself).
The 9 has never once been made as a full-float either.

You CAN build a 9 up much stronger than the 8.8 using parts currently available in the aftermarket however.

+1 They're not full floaters. They simply use a flange to retain the axle in the housing rather than a c-clip, which is convenient until you break an axle and need to get the peice stuck in the carrier out so you can pull the third member. As stated, a 9 inch isn't that much stronger than a 8.8. In my opinion, it's only worth the swap to keep the bolt patterns the same with a SAS.

There are companies out there that make full float kits for the 9 inch. 30 seconds of google found one for $800 with everything you need. Not a bad price IMO, if you want that sort of thing.

brainfart......workin out in the sun all day fried my brain.....but ya, disregard my previous post....9" is the way togo

if u had the choice between the 9" or 8.8 i dont think there would be ANY hesitation on which one was picked......

you can just remove the 3rd member of a 9'' and build it on a bench... And there easy to find.

Ranchero is a 28 spline axle... not stronger than an explorer 8.8...

???.....a explorer 8.8 can be 28 spline aswell...so ur telling em the smaller axle with the same spline count is stronger somehow???.....

the 9" is always stronger in stock form, and MUCH stronger when modded

An explorer 8.8 has never and will never be 28 spline, they are all 31 spline.

......are u on crack, all the 8.8's before 95 i beleive were 28 spline, that would be all explorers still based on a ranger platform, look it up, its common knowledge

also, did u know that mostlikely unless you swapped it out for a later explorer 8.8 that your 8.8 is 28 spline aswell, if u dont beleive me order a locker for it and let me know how it goes

and if anyone can show me where u can get a 31spline 8.8 w/ disc brakes for cheap (which is what ull need to be stronger then a stock 9") and when i mean cheap i mean cheaper then the $50 your gonna pay for a 9" from a junkyard(thats what i cna get them for all day long)

91-94 explorers all had a 31 spline 8.8......an explorer has never not had a 31 spline 8.8 so you try looking it up before posting false information on here...and my crack habbit is none of your business :icon_thumby:

And I know my 8.8 is 28 spline because is it the stock 91 ranger 8.8..... the 92 explorer 8.8 i have sitting in the garage waiting to swapped in is 31 spline tho, with a 31 spline detroit locker on the way.

Explorer 8.8 Facts:

* Has 31-Spline Axle Shafts
* 10-Inch Drums From 1990-1994
* 1995+ Have Disc Brakes
* Rear ends are 1.5 inch Wider Than Ranger Rear End
* Needs show mounts welded On
* Needs Spring Perches Welded To Top Of Axle Tube
* Most Have Limited-Slip (Traction Lok)
* Same 5 On 4.5 Wheel Bolt Pattern As Ranger
* Pre-1990 Ranger Driveshafts Will Not Bolt Directly Up To The Explorer 8.8 (Have Custom Shaft Made Or Get A 1990 Or Newer Shaft)
