intermediate shaft?

What is an intermediate shaft, and also what year 2.3's is it in? Can I remove it for more power (someone said I could)
 
It is in all Lima blocks thru 2001. No, you can't remove it as some models it drives the distributor/oil pump, some models cam sensor/oil pump, some models oil pump is made into the front of the shaft. shady
