35's gear size? Gas Mileage

Hey im looking to buy a 1994 ranger 2wd set up for prerunning it has 35's with stock gearing. What size should it be swapped to and what gas mileage will it get after the regear it will see mostly highway aside from the prerunning. Its getting 15-17 now with stock gears.
 
What engine?
 
it the 3.0 and no idea what gears are in it. Just the stock 95 ones whatever they are.
 
With a 3.0L, towards the mileage end of things I'd go 4.56 and power I'd go 4.88's.

Yeah, with the 3.0L, I'd take it all the way to 5.13 gears. The 3.0L needs to spin to make it's power.

I would expect in the low-20s for highway MPG, and mid-high teens for in-town (lower if you play like a jackrabbit at the stoplights)
 
does anyone have 35's with 5.13's? How would that set up compare with the 4.56's for gas mileage, im a broke college student i need to save the money everywhere possible, but i still like to have fun.
 
5.13s with a 3.0 and 35s is a good combo. You want higher RPMs on a 3.0 for best gas millage.

I am running 4.56's with 35's and I definitely regret not going with 5.13's (with a 4.0 and 5-speed). Mileage for 35's is going to suck no matter what gears you run; you sit up higher so you catch more air, your tires are wider and more aggressive which kills your mileage, and you have more weight spinning (bigger tires weigh more).

The engine is not working as hard to get up to and maintain speed. With 3.73's and 35's, overdrive is worthless because the engine cannot maintain speed in that gear. If you had a bigger motor (think diesel or big block), you would get better mileage with 3.73 than 4.56's or 5.13's. But those motors also have gobs of low end torque to fall back on where as smaller V6's have an optimal RPM range for the most torque.

if your worried about keeping good gas mileage then I wouldnt get tires. Id keep it how it is.
