Made this for my G/F for her b-day back in June. She is big into horses and also likes to wheel, she has a jeep. Hell her father is one of the founding member of both Tread lightly and Great Lakes Four Wheel Drive Association.

Anyway she got some good pics of it up on the net so I thought I would post them up.

Parts used:
Pinion, BW 1350 gears, for body
BW 1350 chain for neck
Grade 8 bolts for legs
Timing chain for tail
TTB 35 splines for head
Spider gear teeth for ears
Connecting rods and cam for jump

All sand blasted and clear coated. I really surprised myself, never made anything like this before. And probably never will again, it was a lot of work for something to sit and do nothing. But she really likes it.

I agree that's definitely cool. It sure beats the old crankshaft lamp.

Please don't. Welding spring steel is VERY dangerous. It can poison you or nearby people very easily.

The horse is quite impressive. Though I'd suggest annealing it. Some of the parts are quite hard (particularly the pinion gear) and will chip easily.

I've always been impressed with car art. There's a guy in Fredericksburg that makes a living doing this- he has a military tank he makes that looks really cool. He does a lot of stuff with horseshoes and nails and other metal parts that are easier to come by.

I know that was a lot of work, but if you could make a bunch of these and put 'em on e-bay, you may be able to make a little tax free side booty!! They would ALL sell for sure, you did a HELL of a job on that. Great for a retirement income later on, too.

I love when someone has enough insight to build something from nothing and have it look that good. Something I could never do. Kudos!!!

Oh man, I would say 20 to 30 or so hours from gathering all the parts to clear coating it. Was a lot of time but it was worth it from the look on her face:wub: It currently sits on her dinner table.

You wouldn’t believe the amount of oil that came out of the t-case gears when I was welding to them as they are oil impregnated. I new oil would come out of them but I didn’t think it was going to be that much.

Oh, and all this was welded using a stick. Would have been much easier if I had a mig.

Also thanks for all the good words:icon_thumby:
