Is it possible to swap the tail housing from my2wd 2.3 M5OD onto an M5OD for a 4x4 with a 4.0L? The 2wd M5OD's for 4.0L's are very hard to come by in my area but there are plenty of 4x4 examples.

yes but for the 4wd M50D to be a 2wd transmission you will have to change the rear output shaft to the one from the 2wd M50D...

Is that as simple as I think it is? Just remove the the tailhousing bolts, unbolt the output shaft and it's done?

I think the whole transmission has to be tore down to do it as the shaft runs the entire length of the trans.

The tail shaft assy is the second last thing pulled from the trans when taking it apart and it's the second piece to go in.

But yes it's tat simple to convert a 4x4 trans to a 2wd and vise versa. Output shaft and tail housing.

I'll trade you a 2wd tailshaft and housing for a 4wd tailshaft and housing.

The 4wd versions are hard to find down here.

Hell, I'll swap 2wd output shafts and housings 2for1
for 4x4 parts!

so correct me if im wrong but swapping a 4x4 tailshaft housing onto a 2 wheel drive m5od would also require dissasembling the tranny?

No it would not if all your doing is swapping the tailshaft housing.

But you do need to disassemble it to swap the actual tailshaft itself.

I dont know why you would want a 2wd tailshaft housing with a 4x4 tailshaft or Vice versa though. There is no point to that.
