Its time for me to rebuild my 3.0 tranny, and after doing some research, i found out that the 4.0 ranger comes with a 5 speed auto. my 3.0 has a
4r44e and i was wondering if a 5r55e would bolt on? or if so, what might i have to do to use the 5 speed. My ranger is a prerunner, and the 5 speed auto would a great help.

the 4.0 has a different bell housing than the 3.0......the bellhousings are NOT removable from the transmissions......

Yes they are but there are internal changes which don't make the swap feasable.

The 5R55E has similair componants inside as the 4R just beefier. The 5th gear is actualy "in the PCM" so to speak. PCM commands O/D band on in 1st to split the 1st and 2nd gears. 2nd becomes 3rd.

If you WERE to install a 5R in place of a 4R, you would still only have 4 forward gears.

The 5 speed part doesnt come in until you stand on it, normal driving it shifts like a normal 4 speed.

Or when it's cold, IIRC.

what all would you have to change on it to make the 5R55E work in a truck that came with the 4R44E? it is a 3.0.
