How do I align the camshaft w/ crankshaft?

I'm rebuilding my motor and I understand how to set the crankshaft at TDC but after that how do you align the camshaft to the crank? I see in my manual that you remove the plug in the cover and look through, but in the manual it looks like they have a mark on the belt that they align with the camshaft. Also, how do I time the distributer? I see the firing order in the manual but I don't know which electrod to start with.
 
the cam sprocket will have a mark, one also on the head, line those up. same thing with the crank pulley.... make sure you put the crank side on first, or else you will never get them lined up.
 
I'm not sure what your talking about. I know that the crank pully lines up with the plastic cover at TDC. So are you saying to align the crank first, then the cam? I'm not sure that I have a mark on the cylinder head to line up with the cam pully. Are you sure there isn't a mark on the inner plastic shroud? Once all that is done how do I time my distributer?
