is ther any talk forumes for the swap of a 300 inline 6 into a ranger i cant seem to find anything related to it an i dont need a fullsize v8 but i like the reliability and tourqe that the inline 6 has anything regarding this would help thank you :headbang:
 
The 300 is two cylinders too long for the ranger engine bay.
 
It actually does fit, just not well. Using the stock 2.9L radiator you get about 1.5 inches for the fan.

Also, the 4.9 doesn't get better mileage than the 5.0 which is only two inches larger in displacement and is easier to put in.


It has been done before, but the general consensus is that it is not worth the extra effort.
 
The 4.9? Did you mean the 4.0 and Iv weighed the pros and cons of the fuel injection and the carbed motors and idk if I want to even deal with the fuel injection ( gas line replacement and tank and everything in between but the one thing I don't like about carbs is they cut out on hillclimbs and side hilling I'm not sure what I want to do because my ranger is originally carbed !!!!
 
The 4.9 is a 300. Same engine. 4.9L = 300 cid.

I durasparked and put a reman 2150 carb on my 84 bii and it runs great off road, much better than the Edelbrock Performer 600 on my 85 bii with a 302.

The 2150 is one of the best carbs you can use off road. I highly recommend it. Yours should have a 2150a, which is the evolution of the 2150, but not as good. They did some crazy stuff to it, electronically controlling it and it's not as reliable as the 2150, which I believe is what would work better for you, as it has worked well for me.
 
Well I currently have a stock 2.8 with a holler 500cfm circle track 2 Barel on it it runs like a raped ape except when I go up hills what trucks did the 4.9 come in ?
 
The 4.9 came in all sorts of F series pickups and Econoline vans from 1965 until 1996.

Ditch the Holley for a Motorcraft 2150, much better off road. Handles inclines no problem. Your Holley is probably similar to my Edelbrock in that it's setup for driving on level surfaces and when it gets on an incline it starves the engine of fuel and the engine stalls. I have plans to swap out the Edelbrock for a Motorcraft 4100 (4 barrel version of the 2150 and its predecessor, the 2100).
 
f-150s. This is a stout engine. lumber and paper companies around here uses those in there bush trucks back in the days. I bought one reman from those guys and put it in my 66 econoline. The power and reliability was really impressive compared to the old 240 it replaced. Can't tell you how it is offroad...
 
It'd do fine offroad. It's a very durable engine with a decent amount of torque right from the factory, certainly won't win many land speed records, though.

Good engine, but just won't fit very well in a Ranger engine bay.
 
Well I'm doing a flat bed so I could always move the radiator to the back and run an electric fan or 2
 
If Jim said there is 1.5" room between the 300 6 and the rad, you might look at using an electric pusher fan in front of the radiator. That might solve your space problem.
 
I would run an Offroad carb... Designed for such things as hill climbing. Then I would drop the whole inline 6 thing. However I'm in the band camp of ppl that think the 300 inline 6 is an overheating pos and the 302 is overrated and under torqued.

I've not had good luck with or known anyone that had good luck with the 300 therefore I wouldn't give you 15 cents for one. However the people that like 300's absolutely love them, they are more fanatical about their junk than Jeep freaks.

hehehe! Well, it's all in the experience we had. I've had good service with mine but my van was more of a fun vehicle. Offroading is pretty tough on an engine. You may be right and may have more experience with them then i do. I don't want to point anybody in the wrong direction.
