Have a 93 ranger with the mazda 5 speed, and at the back of the tranny (around the shifter area) i have a slow leak. It seems to be coming from around the top somewhere. I've heard something about rubber plugs going bad?

I also know my shifter bushings are bad, those are getting replaced.

yep, shift rail plugs. remove and replace.

or clean the area and seal with RTV.

or replace with same size hammer-in freeze plugs.

where are these things at? drivers/passenger side, or on top of the trans? I can't tell where its coming from :icon_confused:

For your own sake, PLEASE fix the leak as soon as possible. Oil starvation was the cause of 2 ruined M5OD-R1s on my old Ranger because the previous owners let them run dry.

BTW it's not hard at all to change out the plugs. Good luck.

FastJake, this isn't the fault of the leak. It's the previous owners. It takes YEARS to leak enough to ruin the transmission.

Mine is the same way, has leaked since I got it. I check the fluid every oil change, and it hasn't ever been a problem. It currently has 180K miles, and has been leaking for at least 40 K of those.

What size cup plug do they take?
