I have an 86 ranger 2.3 4x4 and I'm giving up on it. I have wasted a ton of money and the damn thing still wont run right so I have decided to just change the motor. I have a 2.9 in the ranger i got for parts and it runs great so I plan to use that. Will my transmission bolt up to the 2.9 and if so do i need to change anything to make that work? What else do i need to change other than just the motor? I think I need to change the wiring but I wasnt sure about the computer and all that stuff.....Thanks in advance

If it's an auto, you need to swap bellhousings and torque converters. As in put the 2.9L bellhousing and torque converter on the transmission in the 86 2.3 ranger.

If it's a manual, I know for sure they won't bolt up. If the trans has a removable bellhousing you could probably swap those, otherwise you have to use the trans from the parts ranger as well. I'm not too familiar with ranger trannies other than the A4LD and M5OD, otherwise I would know if the FM145/6 had removable bellhousings.

The Mitsu transmissions do have removable bellhousings, and judging from the pictures in the Tech Library so do the TKs.

The bellhousing on the TK is removeable.

The parts truck is an automatic and my truck is a manual, if that helps....

Then you'll either have to put the auto from the parts truck into you truck along with the engine or find a manual for a 2.9L that you could at least steal the bellhousing from to put on you transmission.
