I have noticed a few people on here are askign how to tell the difference between a 2wd and a 4wd M5OD. Well, of course this is an easy job when the tailhousing is still installed, but what if its not?

Its easy if you know what you are looking for...

Below are pics of the differences.

Here are both shafts side-by-side. The 2wd shaft is on the left, and the 4wd shaft is on the right...notice the 4wd shaft is shorter.

And heres how to tell at a quick glance....

Again, the 2wd shaft is on the left and the 4wd on the right. Notice how the 2wd shaft has a small hole and a snap ring groove and the 4wd doesnt. The hole is for a small ball bearing the holds the speedo gear in place, and the groove is for the snap ring. The 4wd doesnt need these as the speedo gear is in the t-case on 4wd vehicles. (No that isnt a groove of any kind on the 4wd shaft, its crap that collects where the rear seal rides, and I havent cleaned it off yet)
