Black windshield trim? stock?

I see ALOT of 1st gen rangers with the chrome windshield trim painted black.

Is this a OEM thing, or somone just painted it flat black?

The reason I ask is that it appears they just painted over a standard chrome trim, and that does not seem OEM, as paint does not adhere well to very smooth surfaces like chrome, and noticed that rock ships and the paint flakes off, requiring touch up. :no2:

My 1989 has black from the factory. As to if it is just the chrome painted, I have no clue. Mine has not started to flake yet, either.

Mines a 87 and it also is flat black and faded in spots. I'm not sure wether to repaint it black or remove the paint and polish them shiny.

Mine has the horizontal parts black, and the vertical parts chrome. The black is peeling so I don't know how original it is.

My former 1986 Bronco II had flat black trim that was wearing off -- with nice shiny chrome-like-metal underneath. AFAIK it came from the factory that way.

My '88 is flaking black, with nice-n-shiny underneath, and had a '90 B2 that was the same way (until the ex rolled it... should've known then there'd be trouble with her!).

My '88 is flat black all around. That's the way I got it, so I presume its stock.
btw, how does the trim come off? -
Is it clipped down against the window/glass?
I want to remove mine to seal the windshield. I think Ive got a leak coming in from the RS corner...

I would like to know how to remove it also, but everytime I have tried on other cars, I end up destroying them getting them off. There must be a secret or tool to use. Perhaps I will ask a body shop and post afterward.

The "secret" tool is episodically available at Harbor Freight. And it is now.

The relevant tool is the one with the arrowhead on the end. And I don't think you can beat this price....

what really bakes your mind is something stranger....

My STX truck came with everything "blacked out" EXCEPT the windshield moulding which was bright aluminum.

My friend's '87 XLT CAME with everything chromed EXCEPT the windshield moulding which was blacked.

But wait it gets stranger... my truck came with Wide tires
on NARROW rims (as per the door tag) his came with narrow
tires on the wide rims., what's worse is mine was a 2.9 supecab
truck with factory sway bars his was a 4cyl std cab without them...
