I've got an '87 extended cab 4x4 with a 7.5" axle and 9" drums. I'm interested in upgrading to 10" drums. I've looked through the forum and tech articles. Everything I've read suggests that the 10" conversion is a direct bolt in. However, I've noticed that the 10" shoes are an inch wider then the 9". My question: what is making up for this added inch width? Are the axle shafts protruding an inch further from the axle tube? Is it the mounting offset inside the drum? Is the 10" backing plate indexed towards the center of the vehicle? I don't want to pull my axle apart only to find out the drums won't slide all the way onto the hub at the end of the job.
My other question: dose it matter if the donor is an Areostar or a Ranger? I'm assuming their assemblies share the same part numbers. Is that correct?
