hey there, i have a 1994 ranger stx 4x4 with a 4.0L and manual transmission in it already and it has 330,000kms on it and i was maybe planning on changing out the engine for one with less kms on it. i was wondering will any 4.0L engine maybe between 1990 and 2000 fit in there? if not what are the differences? and what should i be looking for if i buy an engine?

Read up on the topic

Go to the Tech section of this website and look at the "4.0 rebuild" story - that will tell you a lot. It will tell you how to identify the donor motor. Some of the Ranger repair manuals have similar info. Your best bet is to simply find another '94. Run a WTB in the Classifieds section. Check out the "parts for sale" area.

My '99 Ranger has a 93 Explorer motor in it currently. I had to modify the crank position sensor and make modifications to one motor mount - but it runs fine. Hoping to rebuild the 99 engine eventually.

Don't replace an engine only because of mileage.

Replace it to repair known problems isolated to the engine.

im not going to replace the engine just because of mileage. the head gasket is starting to go im pretty sure so if anything does end up happening to the engine in my truck right now i will know what to look for. i was pretty much just starting this thread to just get info on how to idnetify the different engines.

will newer 4.0l fit in 93-94? tranny also?

get one from an exact year better yet a truck just like yours... cause you might have electrical and computer problems
