I went looking for a rear axle w/ 4.10's in it today so I went to all 3 of my local junk yards.

None of the yards would let me walk around, I understand about liabilty and everything but I like looking around for sh*t I dont need.

None of the yards had what I wanted, just a '93 up rear Ranger axle. I dont care if its a 7.5 or 8.8, open or L/S I just want 4.10's

and one of the yards tried telling me if my truck didnt come w/ an 8.8 from the factory it wont fit on my truck, then they told me they wanted $250 for a 7.5 and thats when I just walked away

Looks like I'm gonna have to go to Tampa to find what I'm looking for

I"m with you. Here in San Diego the majority of them charge within 10-20% of what I can get it new for. I always thought it was good to move your inventory but not here. Obviously there are people paying those prices so they think they can sell it to everybody for that. I'll just be patient and cruise craigslist and the internet for what I want to pay. Good luck.

They are doing that because of the price of iron right now. If they don't sell the parts to you they will just sell the parts as scrap and get that much out of them.

Not quite, you can get $150-$200 for an entire car, a single axle should be worth significantly less at scrap price.

That sucks. I love the closest junk yard to me. They have a huge scrap metal yard nicely organized by type (pipe, plate, c-channel, etc). All you gotta do is ask if you can look around and you can drive your truck back to the scrap area. You pick it, weigh it, and tell them how much you got. They sell it for a quarter a pound and some of the stuff looks brand new. Their selection of vehicles is kinda limited for the gen 1 and 2 rangers though and you can forget about anything older than 1980.

I'm with you. Junkyards aren't much fun anymore, now I just call and save the gas because they never seem to have what I'm looking for anyway. The "hunt" is my favorite part, snooping around all that devestation and tradgedy.

I shoulda been an insurance adjuster, I just love looking at crashed cars and seeing what is left for the picking.

Out of the 4 junkyards around here only 2 of them let you walk around.

Wow, that sucks... u-pulls around here are awesome compared to yours. You dont even have to tell em what ur wanting, just go out back and have at it. The bigger stuff like engines, axles, and trannys can be a lil spendy cuz if theyre good theyve already pulled em, but i went in got the 'FORD' emblems off of a 76, drivers window out of B2, front yoke for rear driveline, t-case shifter and just a wheelbarrow full of stuff, like 5.0 symbols... it was all like $25. Half the time if you just want something small like an under hood light, theyre like "eh, its yours". Tho they started this deal where its $1 to get in now...

Yeah i kind of know how you feel. Usually my local junkyard is really good, but I called in to see about a 8.8 w/discs, L/S, and 4.10s. They wanted $500, I thought it was really steep but I was still ok with it until they said they also wanted my old axle for core value, and that they wouldn't take anything off the price when I bring them the old axle. I told them to forget it my axle was still good I just wanted the rear disc and L/S for an upgrade.

Look for the rear axle in an automatice B2, most had 4.10 LS (remember it is a 7.5) and its the same width as a gen3+ ranger...

some of the u pull are getting cute now too they charge you for the chrome and the nameplate on the fender as well as the core charge and by the time you buy a door which starts at $10 by the time they get you for all the stuff in it including glass bumpers and all its a ton of money.. its to the point where its cheaper to buy korean body parts if you need em than good used ones

unfortunately the cheap aftermarket stuff doesn't fit half as good as factory stuff.

The thing I love about junkyards is when they try and tell me something like they actually know what they're talking about. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt and they end up being wrong just like I thought originally.

I do like there cross reference books, but the yards here never have what I am after ..... most of the F/S GM's of my vintage have been sold for scrap. but they are full of RBV's and TTB F-250's.

The local yards around here seem to have pretty good prices, and are usually pretty chill about looking in the yard. I guess you kinda have to be when you're burning RV's and crushing boats and selling them for scrap 'metal.'

I think they have trees to grow that GM stuff on down here. Parts seem to be laying around everywhere for them for pretty cheap.

The problem is all the yard around me call them selves "used parts store" and charge almost new prices....

Oh well, If I can't find what I'm looking for I guess I'm gonna have to learn how to use a Dial indicator and how to set a rear end up

Shit If I had a yard like that around I'd be willing to pay 5 - 10 bucks just to look

maybe we should work out a trade. I need a D60 front from a 73-87 1 ton to replace my corp 10bolt.

The online ones overcharge the worst from what I've seen. They were charging 760 for a front D44 front with disks and 3.73's

I could buy an entire bronco for that and salvage the 302 and the D44 and Ford 9 for well under 500 around here

we paid 450 for axle and springs, but the axle had 7000 miles on it. and was geared right for our use to match the front.a bit steep, but a total bolt in.FYI all,we put a 2004 ranger rear axle in a 1990 ranger--all bolted right in,and we used the 2004 springs too-all bolted right in.it had a 7.5 as the original axle.

around here the junk yards almost never call you back when you ask them about parts and they say 4.10's are rare.if you can read the ford axle tags youll find that they are more common than you might think.a lot of the 4 banger trucks came with those axles.i took the axle tags off so the wrecker wouldent gouge me on the price(it costed them the same as a 2.75 axle to haul off)
