Just pulled out the motor in a 1986 2.9 Ranger 4wd. The freeze plugs were rusted and all but two were either rusted through, oozing water or as in one case popped so it was puking water, the reason I changed them all.

I am getting a water leak between the engine and the trans, it is dripping down over the starter and the torque converter access panel on the between the bell housing and the engine. It is leaking pretty good. I imagine this could have been going on before I did the freeze plugs but they were real bad and had to be done. Figured that was the original leak cause and it was. But this to I suspect. I can find no water leaking anywhere on the surface of the motor, replaced all the hoses, ect.. No water in the oil. Runs great until it runs out of water, heh.

Checked all of the new freeze plugs all doing great, I replaced all 10 of them. I did not see any behind the flywheel, to my knowledge there are none.

Any Ideas, anyone, before I jerk the trans and see if I can see the leak. It only leaks when it pressures up. (running and has cooling system pressure)

Thanks!!

there are plugs in the heads, how about one of them, (might be from overheating that a head one has let go).

I remember someone saying there are "markers" in the heads to tell if it's been overheated, but what they are, I have no idea.

No leaks on exterior of motor,

It is behind the bell housing, and above the crank. the head gasket could be leaking but it runs like a sewing machine so i find that unlikely, i suppose there could be a hole in the block. I will drop the trans again ( the only problem till now I have ever had with this truck ) and take a look.
