I have a 87 bronco 2 2.9l that i cant get past D.E.Q. Im about 100 hydrocarbons to high. Any advice?

Usually high HC means that it's there's something going on with the ignition (you're running too rich, too much gas in exhaust)

I would check:

- Where is it idling? Possibly too high?
- Timing @ 12* BTDC?
- When was the last time a full ignition tune up was done?
- Where is the fuel pressure? If it's too high (as in past 38-40 psi with the key on, engine off) then your problem points to a ruptured fuel pressure regulator

If all of this checks out then it could be time for a new cat.

Ok thanks I was saving the cat for last resort. I did a full tune up the day after I failed, went back and failed even worse. I gapped the plugs to .45 I believe. Cap, rotor, coil, plugs, and wires, all replaced. I haven't checked the timing yet but it was my next move. Thanks for the other tips very much appreciated!
