which transmission was the best? out of the first gen. b2? not for anything impaticular just like in terms of duribility.

asking what is the best transmission is kinda like asking what the best color is... it's really an opinion thing, along with what will work with what you've already got in your truck...

Go with a M5OD, its a 5 speed that came in late 90 B2's, rangers and the gen 1 explorers.

Great tranny that'll bolt up to your 2.9

The FM145 is a marginal trans IMO, it uses ball bearings (M5OD has tapered roller bearings), and doesn't have the greatest 5th gear lubrication.
I had a FM146 in mine and right about 10K miles after I took ownership of it it developed a noisy output shaft bearing (audible in 5th gear). I have a used M5OD (from a '90 Ranger) in it's place now and been fine since.
