My credo
to prevent Found On the Road Dead, Fix Or Repair Daily
Last night after over 400 miles from Toronto, with a complete BMW I6 in the bed, the rear most U- joint spit out a cap and dropped the shaft onto the road. I used an 8mm socket and a tire iron to remove the back section of shaft. Took me an hour beside the road to take the shaft off. I could only drive in 4 w low. I took state highways, averaging 40 mph for 171 miles I tried to keep the RPM under 4000, but there were a few spikes to 4250 ,once to 4500. Engine did fine, front end groaned and growled, but we made it home. :D

It was wise of you to bring a spare differential on the trip ;missingteeth;

Glad you made it home :yahoo:

Why only 4lo?

I drove my truck a week with only FWD with my D30. Half the oil amount to cool the gears as the rear axle, smaller ujoints on my driveshaft, 32 inch M/T tires, easily doing over 55mph and by the last day of only FWD, I was doing FWD burnouts with it.

I dunno why 4 low. I couldn't get the triangular gizmo the shift motor works to stay in 4 high. The truck came to me without the shift motor and who knows what else . The 229s in my Jeeps were the same way because low range locks the shafts to both axles . Un locked, TC just spins rear out put with the shaft out.

there isn't a detent for 4hi in the electric cases, found that out myself too

I used FWD for a week or so waiting on my explorer shaft to be shortened for my b2. Dana 28. Auto hubs. Electric case. No problems at all.

I ran my '89 STX FWD for about 2 weeks until I found another STX "high ryder" case. That thing did great FWD burnouts!

Skins like you need to get the Shiftster.

Yah I was thinking that too when I crawled under and tweaked it into 4 w high with a pair of long nosed vise grips I wired them in place in case they pop off

Ill be ordering a new Spicer U-joint and a new center bearing after the 4th. :D
