on several other off road websites people are saying that lifting and puttting bigger tires on a 2wd 2.3l truck will just make you loose power and it is a waste of money...is this true?

you will loose a very noticeable amount of power unless you re-gear your axles (about $4-500 per axle, including labor and parts).

even if you regear you'll notice you don't have the grunt you used to, I have 4.10 gears and 31's and there's definetely a difference from a few combinations ago... but when it really counts I have low range since I have 4x4.

Mine feels fine with that combo! Feels like a stock setup again, and my speedo is back to where it needs to be. I think it's like 2mph off.

I'm running 4.56's though. Don't worry about gas mileage or what anyone else says about running that gear ratio. You will need it with the small displacement of the 2.3.

If u run 31s put at least 4.10 gear in ur truck. U shuld find a compleat rear out of an 4x4 ranger with a 4 popper to save on changing ur gears. I have a srap yard near me that sells parts cheap!!

To be technical you won't lose power. You will increase driveline resistance which means more power is required to move the truck. The gearing changes mentioned will effectively decrease driveline resistance making the power you have more effective at moving the truck.

I have a 94 2.3 with 4.56 and 33x12.50 and I notice it isn't nearly as easy to drive considering i had 4.56 with 30 in before. I really notice it on the highway, just like it was stock gearing with 30 in tires, I can hardly use 5th gear, but I can still get it up over 90 MPH but my biggest complaint is the 13 MPG.
