Just got a Bronco II, slams into drive

I just bought an '88 Bronco II, 4x4, 2.9L automatic transmission. It seems to slam into drive. It also seems to take a second or two to finally catch reverse but it doesn't slam or anything. What would cause this problem? Thanks.
 
Do you have enough fluid and/or is it overfilled? Low fluid level will cause that sometimes. If the engine idles too fast it will also cause this.
 
The issue is that you have an automatic transmission.
 
Start with a fluid change. Sounds like the Servo's or Accumulator's may be gunked up. My guess would be a bad servo or a worn out servo cover.
 
It idles kinda high, usually about 1200-1500. It drops down to about normal in drive. I will check the trans fluid as well to see.

Two things, real quick:

1) With the engine running, unplug the IAC (little black 2 wire connector, goes to the cylinder on the side of the intake.

2) Do you know the proper way to check transmission fluid? Not everyone does, and doing it wrong will give you a VERY wrong reading.
 
Jesus, 1200 RPM is way too fast, 1500 is obscene. Spec at warm idle is around 850. Any automatic will clunk coming out of park at that speed.
 
Is your throttle cable stuck? I know when I bought my first B2 the dumba$$ before me set the idle with the intake throttle screw at 1100 to "increase preformance"... Probably not your problem though.

I thought i was alone in this problem, doesnt really bother me though. same story high rpms in park and neutral drop it into drive and its normal again and reverse often times does take a second or two to catch id have to say we have the same problem
 
I'll check the IAC to see what happens. Like I said, I just got this truck about a week ago so I'm learning some of the ins and outs of it. All I've done so far has been a tune-up and oil change. None of that of course fixed any of the problems but it's just something I do. I'll check the throttle cable too, who knows.
 
Check everything in the engine bay. Make sure you have no leaking vac lines (should be easy, your engine has about 2) spray some carb cleaner around the intake gaskets and listen for changes in idle quality.

If all that seems ok and the IAC does kill the engine, or at least drops the idle speed I'll tell you how to adjust the idle speed. I know the sticker says it can't be adjusted, well it can.



Brownie, you have carb problems. I don't know much about that stupid feed-back carbs, but I'd be looking for a gross-idle screw.

Thanks ads, luckily i should be getting a job right quick and when that happens im going to get a rebuild on my 2.8, a brand new ignition from napa for a 78 pinto with the 2.8 and ill be golden :D
 
Don't forget to get a new non-feedback carb.
