I have a 2000 2wd manual transmission 2.5L Ranger that has always been very picky about its octane requirements. Unless I use premium grade fuels it tends to detonate under mild load and even a single "ping" when taking off from a light.

Well this was never an issue till now, with the price of fuel getting so expensive is there anything I can do to make my truck have less expensive taste at the fuel pump.

Ive had the truck for a long time, and this has been a issue since I purchased it at 50k, it now has 125k

service and maintenance is performed religiously with Mobile 1 oil and filters and other then the rich fuel taste buds it has always run great,

premium is just getting too dang expensive, and either the quality of premium fuel is decreasing or my truck is getting pickier, but the problem is getting more frequent it seems

any guidance is appreciated, been in the tech fields all my life, I'm a former automotive/diesel/aviation mech/tech, but it has been many, many years ago... so all my knowledge is obsolete

Thanks in advance,
Av

2.5 L detonation

I have the same problem on my 2.5 with 75k miles. My gut reaction is a sensor problem. It reminds me of a technical prob I once had on a GM car. When the vacuum line fell off the EGR valve, the engine would ping like a pound of marbles. I see a lot of posts with 4.0 ping or hi-performance ping, but its just a standard 2.5 Lima motor in mine.

Any updates from anyone on the ping??? I cant afford a blown piston!

Why haven't you taken the truck to a dealer and have the ECM reprogrammed?

I'm having the same pinging issue here, anyone have anything constructive to add?

I've tried just about everything; recent timing belt change, tune up, fuel filter, cam sensor, crank sensor, egr valve, fuel pump pressure is up to spec. Even pulled another ECM from the pick and pull yard, no change. Still pings, been doing it for a while now. no codes both computers run identically. 2.5, 2wd, manual.
