i was wonderin if anyone out there knows anything about the 99-01 cougars, specifically if the 4 cykinder 5spd are any good and if theres any problems with those cars, because a buddy of mines got one for sale for about 2000, but i have no idea about front wheel drives or any thing on the obd2

they do alright...as long as you never have to work on them (TIGHT....although the 4 bangers arent as bad as the 6's).
the interiors seem to fall off with little provocation.

First off, this is the same platform as the mistique and countour. Every vehicle has its weak points and the ones I noticed working is my shop are:
Make sure the lower control arm bushings are not pulled through the arm
Bad wheel bearings
bad lower ball joints
poor alignment resulting from any of the above
One thing that is good is the fact it is a 5-speed/manual. The automatics can be problems. Do yourself a favor and get the vehicle inspected. Make sure the timing belt(s) have been changed if over 60k miles.
Hope it works out and dont be scared off by the list. Alot of vehicles' lists of problem areas are alot longer!

Also, make sure the rear struts are not leaking and no broken coil springs. Josh
