I'm back in the Ranger game. This time I got a 98 Ranger ext cab 4.0, 5 speed 4x4 with just under 140k on it. The heater control valve was leaking (fixed), the engine sounds like it has a vacuum leak, and the 4x4 is not working.

The 4x4 switch is broken off and sitting behind the cover, I pulled it out and its plugged in and switches around, I think its OK. The electric shift motor was my assumption to be broke since i've heard about those breaking left and right. When I examined the shift motor I noticed the wiring hand been cut and re-crimped back together. Tapping on it did not get it to engage. When i'm driving around in 2wd the 4x4 and 4lo lights blink .

My question is where do I start on this guy to fix it? I dont have an electrical diagram. Or is it even worth fixing? Can I convert it to manual shift like the SD NP273's? anyone done that? I'd need to add manual hubs too but I kinda like that idea either way.

There is a problem with the wiring, the gem is not detecting the shift motor. To convert to manual, you will need a 2wd gem module and manual Tcase

Push comes to shove, you can do what the PO did to my 94 Ranger . He removed the shift motor, leaving just a triangular stub, that the motor connected to. The case under the motor has the modes stamped into the casting. A pair of pliers is all it takes to shift it. It clicks when it is at the sight spot. It is positive, which I hear the electric shifts were not. Fine for my uses. The front hubs are manual. I am positive that 4wd is engaged when it is called for. I haven't had that feature since my first AWD Grand Wagoneer. When winter hits or I go to the beach or go after fire wood . I shift into 4 high, and run with hubs unlocked, until I need the 4 wd. Not the way I do things usually, but this hack came with the truck. It is crude but effective :D

I would be ok with that except the only time I would use it is in the snow. I really dont want to crawl up under the truck with pliers in the freezing snow:icon_thumby:
 
Yes, it does. When I did my v8 swap, used the donor's awd case for a while, and my 4x4 lights always flashed. Changed my gem module and it solved that problem. It's located behind the radio to the left...

Cool man, PS nice tires same exact ones I run lol. Goodyear authority a/t's. not sure if my alldata had that particular wiring diagram but lemme know if you need it I can look. Also have access to some of my schools documentation through online databases.
 
That would be awesome if you could get me the wiring diagrams. Then I would have a place to start sorting things out. Let me know if you get a chance, thanks :icon_cheers:

It really just means the GEM knows there is a problem. I can't remember if that one does flash out codes or not though.

See if you can get someone to get the codes out for you.

I've only had the truck 2 days, but I'll get a scanner on it tomorrow. I have to figure out the high idle too, i think its a vacuum leak.
 
Get the codes from the GEM if your scanner does that and I'll get you the right tests for the code.
 
Well, there were a couple codes in the GEM. I got :
KOEO
B1302 acc delay relay coil ckt fault
P1878 T-Case disengaged sol ckt fault
In Memory
B1302 again
B1313 battery saver relay coil ckt fault
b1371 illum entry ckt fault
B1398 L window 1 touch relay ckt fault (I dont have power windows though)
P 1820 T Case CW shift relay fault

After reading them I cleared the codes and re-checked KOEO and only pulled P1878
