Tranny shift delay

Alright just a heads up i cant run my truck at all right now so i wont be able to immediately test any ideas. Ok so my tranny takes a long time to shift. By shift i mean from park to drive it takes 2-3 seconds for drive to engage and i counted as far as 10 seconds for reverse to engage. If it helps once its in drive it shifts fine from 1-2-3. any ideas?

Check the auto dipstick. Gotta have the engine warmed up and in neutral ? Don't know Ford autos. If it is low , top it off. If it is brown from age or black and burnt smelling. Brown , drop the pan and expect to do a fluid and filter . If it is black and burnt smelling it is prolly toast.

Thats usually a sign of old age. the seals and such inside harden and leak at the clutch packs, causing this delay. It does not necisarily mean that the trans is about to fail. I have had good luck with this by changing the fluid and filter, and substituting a quart of TransX in place of atf. this soften the seals and has corrected this problem for me in the past.

like they said....drop the pan....rebuild any servo o-rings/etc. that you can easily get to (without removing the valve body!).......change the filter and add new fluid....adjust the bands according to the manual

I had a 2 second delay going into drive too. The tranny shop replaced the valve body and it was much better.
