We unbolted the muffler right after the cat. Besides for emissions does this really matter? Its a 4.0 OHV, and its not too loud...

the muffler isnt an emissions device, so you would still pass a sniffer test....although you would fail the visual for obvious reasons.

as i tell everyone who thinks dumping exhaust under their rigs is neat: exhaust gases contain very corrosive chemicals that will speed corrosion on exposed under-body parts such as his frame. there is also the risk of trapping a "bubble" of gas under the truck and allowing poisonous carbon monoxide to seep into the cab.

you can buy a 90-degree elbow at any auto parts store for like $3 and point all that bad stuff out from under the truck.

yeah we decided were gunna put the muffler back on, its getting annoying now. it was fun at first. but not on the freeway when you wanna talk to the person next to you.

just replace the muffler with a length of straight pipe, will sound nice and get the gases out the back of the truck

most of the noise your experiencing now is because of resonance due to the exhaust exiting right under your feet. it you pipe the exhaust all the way out the back of the truck, the decibel level inside the cab will be quite reasonable.

when i first got my truck, it had the stock exhaust, and the muffler had rusted completely in half, so it was in effect the same as just taking the muffler off. back then, the sound level in the cab was much higher than it is now with my true duals and tiny glasspacks...even though the duals are much louder when your outside the truck.

if nothing else...it'll only cost you a $5 peice of patch pipe to give it a shot :dntknw:

i just put and exhaust on my truck and i dumped it down before the back axle so your say this will make my frame rust out faster? because of the gases?
like its a turndown pipe right at the end of my magnaflow muffler so all the smoke goes down to the ground the out the sides ?

yes, dumping exhaust under the truck will cause all exposed steel components to rust out faster...get that crap out from under your truck.

That's precisely why Ford stopped having the exhaust exit in front of the rear tires on the 96 F150's. The exhaust gases were screwing up the finish on the right rear wheels. Looks cool, but it's a bad idea.

:agree: The right rear wheel on my B2 is pretty nasty looking compared to the others but I love the before tire exit too much to get rid of it.

It must depend, because on my dads '97 F-150 all the wheels look the same, the right rear doesn't look any worse than the rest of them, and we don't rotate them that often.


As far as the emissions inspection, we not longer have a muffler or tailpipes on the truck F-150 (Gibson Supertruck rotted and fell off), and had no problems getting it through emission. HOWEVER, here in Ohio vehicles '96+ don't get a sniffer test, they just plug in an OBDII scanner to see if theres any codes. For a sniffer test you'll need to have a pipe exiting the side. I myself just plan on running a piece of flexpipe out the side of my Ranger temporarily to get the test.

So putting turndown tips after the muffler will not get rid of the corrosion part of the deal? atleast the gasses are hitting the road instead of being randomly thrown around under the truck?...

Ok i unbolted my exhaust from the cat back and tucked the remainng pipe away. I just put a 90* down-turn and its nicely noisy/loud like was mention in previous post, but im just doin this till i get the money and get a good full exhaust. Is this a bad idea?

its really best if you can get the exhaust out from under the truck. pointing it down will help a little...but i wouldnt run my truck like that.

ya after i read this forum about that i looked at my truck whn it was running and i have a trundown so all the gases are getting shot to the ground and not very much was even coming close to the body and when im driving all the gases are goin out the back. im prob not leaving mine like that i just wanted to get my magnaflow on so as a cheep way i bought a turndown for 5$ and welded that on and gave me a wicked sound.
