I just installed another transmission from a 2000 Ranger into my 1995 Ranger and there's an electrical connection missing on the new tranny. I pulled the old one off and it does'nt do anything. It's basically a plug with a connection on it. Here's what it looks like: Will this cause a CEL? Thanks.

The first picture plug is the speed sensor (VSS), and if that transmission came out of your truck, then the missing plug will cause a CEL. What code are you pulling up?
 
You'll need to use the tail housing off the old trans. You also need the gear off the out put shaft, It's held on by a snap ring.
You can seal the tail housing back on with a thin bead of silicone but, Anerobic sealer is the proper stuff to use.
 
ummm, your speedometer cable is supposed to be in that (unless they put it electronic in the diff sensor for 95) but that plug is still used with the 2 wires even if the speedo is electric now. Like mutant pony said, just take that sensor out (one 8mm bolt) and take off the 6 or so bolts holding the tailhousing on each transmission and take off the speedometer gear from the old transmission and swap the gear and the old tailhousing onto the new tranny. drain the tranny first by the way. And normally for transmission and t-case parts I tend to use a gray RTV and have good luck with it, make sure that both surfaces are clean and dry before trying to seal the old housing onto the new tranny then bolt the sensor in.
 
I thought I was done with this thing! Sorry I did'nt post up sooner. I finally got the hydraulic line to seat into the slave cylinder though, it took everything I had to get it in. I don't know why, it's usually never that hard.

Yeah, my Ranger has the electronic deal or whatever it is coming from the differential but it also has this darn plug for some reason. Can I remove the tailhousing without pulling the tranny and is there a gasket I need or just use silicone?

I really appreciate the help and knowledge guys, I'd be lost without TRS. I've only started the truck and have'nt driven it so there's no tranny fluid in it yet. There was no CEL on though when I started it but I suppose it's because the truck was'nt moving. Are you sure I will get a CEL by leaving the wire unplugged?

After reading my "Haynes" manual, it says the VSS produces a pulsing voltage whenever vehicle speed is over 3mph.

It says these pulses are translated by the PCM and provided for other systems for fuel and transmission shift control. The VSS is part of the "Transmission Converter Clutch" system, or (TCC). Any problems will usually set a code 452.

Since my Ranger is a manual transmission does anyone know if this needs to be reconnected? I have'nt filled the trans with fluid yet and would hate to have to drain it out when I could change it (tailshafts) first you know? Thanks.

You don't have a TCC, so if that's all it's for, don't worry about it.

Your PCM won't even look for it.

And this will be a hard code. If you want to make yourself feel better, turn the key on and see if the check engine light comes on.

I actually called a transmission repair facility before I read your post and he said the same thing, with the exception of it being a hard code. Do you work at a transmission place?

I just bled the clutch about 10 minutes ago and now I'm going to fill the tranny with fluid (Mercon) and test drive it. I hope it's all good. I wonder why the electrical connector's even there?

Now that I recall, this is my third transmission in this truck and the original one was just a blank plug going into the tailshaft where the wire plugged in....................if my memory serves me right.

No, I don't work at a transmission place.

Right now I'm spending my nights freezing my butt off 50 miles from you at Air Force Plant #42 in Palmdale. We're trying to test our telescope on the ground against Polaris and other fields up to 20 deg away. It's working, but with quite a lot of chewing gum and baling wire (one of the gyros is not doing well, but our aircraft is fixed to the ground, so it only rotates at 15 deg/hour and we can handle it).
 
Oh ok, it just seemed like you did is all. Looks like I'm going to have to swap out the tailshaft after all. I'm just going to get down and dirty tonight with a shop light in the garage because I need this done.

After about an hour of driving the Ranger the CEL did come on and I ran to AutoZone to get a code reader. There was one code and it was P0500, which means VSS is bad or something. Looks like it needs that sensor in mine after all.
