Hey guys i got an 86 ranger xl andd i wanna put the highest hhorse power engine without new mounts, what do you suggest?
 
4.0 is a common swap. Use the search function, or make a post in the swap section of the forum. Welcome to TRS!

That makes this a "mod" not a "restoration".
 
well when he says without new mounts, he probably means the biggest motor they put in the truck for that year. which would be a 2.9..right? so technically it's kinda a restoration..except without the restoration.
 
yea, 2.9 was the biggest one for the 86 year, although the early 2.9s had weak heads, if your hell bent on a 2.9, get the heads of a 89+ 2.9, they are inproved. if you want a drop in motor, the 4.0 fits in, altho a little wiring is required.. and i believe the factory tach wont work too, i think..
 
but the 4.0 (in my case) sat down on the factory 2.9 motor mounts.

The 2.8/2.9/4.0 mounts are pretty universal, you can adapt about anything to work with a vertical stud coming out of a flat pad.
