remove the bumper, gas tank filler neck, and disconnect the taillight harness, and possibly a ground by the filler neck. There should be 6 torx bolts that I believe are t50 or t55. If they come out smooth you are alright, but most of the time the clip will break and they spin and become quite a problem to remove, especially above the gas tank. In the case this happens, you can cut the head of the bolt and then install a new clip when the bed is off.

Bed bolts

You can almost bet the farm that those clips will break off. I think Ford made them out of bone china or something. I would make sure the local dealer has a few in stock Mine did not and it was a total pain in the but to get some. They have changed the design since my 91. IMHO it is a self tapping one use clip. Good luck

Use PB blaster on it. They will break loose if you have a good impact. I had one clip i had to weld to the frame to keep from turning, but it came out.

Ford put Loctite on them too. A little heat should help them come off (careful not to burn the paint on the bed around the bolt though, like I did :icon_twisted:)

pb blaster inbetween the bed and the frame aiming for the clips on the bolts (6 in all). let that sit for a while (maybe overnight) then take out the 3 screws holding the filler neck to the bed. lastly unclip the rear light harness( behind bumper underneath tailgate) and take out the 6 bed bolts (torxs #55). i had to use a piece of pipe to get a lil more leverage on the ratchet to break them free, just dont pull on them too hard itll be alot easier just to use more pb blaster then to replace the clips that the bolts thread into if you snap a bolt. the bumper can stay on just make sure the bed gets lifted high enough to clear i when removing it.

if PB BLAST don't work to loosen bolt try an old farm trick of using brake fluid in a spray bottle set to stream. be carefull not to get it on exterior paint as it is not good for it
