Ok so I have a 1988 BII 4x4 with a 2.9 and a 5 speed that is pushing 250,000 miles (Just wont die). And I also have a newly acquired 1984 Ranger 4x4, 2.8, 4 speed with a poorly maintained 105,000 miles on it. They are both absolutely gutless but, the hubby has always wanted to drop a 351w in his BII and put full size axles under it. So what I want to do is pull the 2.9 and the 5 speed, completely rebuild them and stuff the whole thing into my lil ranger. What I need to know is how compatible the two models are I know they are about the same size but function differently as one is fuel injected and one has an itty bitty 2 barrel carb. The goal behind this is to get back the 25mpg that engine got 150,000 miles ago and the parts for the 2.9 seem to be ALOT easier to come by. Thanks for your input.

Not a simple switch for sure. The 2.8 and 2.9 are completely different engines. I was looking to do a similar thing with the rust free '84 BII that I bought to house a 4.0. I had all the donors to do so, but now will most likely go with a 302 in the BII instead because of simplicity.

Because the BII is fuel injected, you'll need the whole fuel system if you want stock. You'll also need the engine cabling and computer. The cabling is also different under the dash. You will need to figure out the mounts for the radiator because they are different on the '84 and all other years. (prob '83/'84 for Rangers).

Check out this site. Very good for BIIs, though TRS has very good resources also.
