Winch Idea

So I've been tossing the idea around in my head about getting a winch for my truck. the big problem is, I don't have anywhere to mount one. I thought of mounting one under the bed on the spare tire carrier bar. Although, I figure that that's not strong enough. So I though, What if you mount a winch inside the truck box in the bed with a hole cut in the box so that the cable can go out. That way, the winch is out of the way until its needed and a clean appearance. What do you all think of the idea? It would look essentially like this:

what good would it do in the tool box other than pulling stuff in the bed?
why do you want/need a winch? to pull you out of mud? if so mount it inside the bumper. make a winch plate out of 1/4" steel and go for it.

i wouldn't trust a toolbox metal to support a winch
the winch shown in the pic is like a 3k lbs, not enough for a truck anyways, not really... you'll want an 8k at least.

give us more details on what you plan to use the winch for.

I was gonna mount it to the bed through the box and reenforce the bed somehow. I was planning on using it for pulling other people out or myself out of a ditch if i went into one (hopefully not). I dunno. I'm really just spit-balling because I'm bored and itching to do something to the truck. haha

2x4 box tubing frame to frame with the winch mounted to that in the spare tire location, under the bed. As stated, the bed and aluminum toolbox are not strong enough, even for a 3k. It will pull right through the box first time you use it...

I mounted my winch flush with my front bumper.I have a 2" body lift cut out the bracket that holds the bottom of the radiator.Put a piece of angle in to replace the piece I cut out.Put in a plate from one frame rail than the other.Sorry no pic hard drive crash a while back.

I like your idea though because when I use my winch I'm trying to get out of something not further into it.

It could be made to work with the proper re-enforcement. But I haven't done a lot of winching out of stucks so don't know how good it would work for that. I could see it being used with a swivel arm to lift loads into the back of the truck or pulling something onto a trailer.

Lol well maby if you re enforced the crap out of the tool box and bed sides, still then your pull point has to be straight behind you unless you wait for a tree fo grow or get a pull pal.

I have a receiver winch mount. I can put the winch in the back or the front receiver. This is the way to go so you can take it off and put it up when you are not using it. Look into that idea!!

Thanks all for the input. I might go with the rear hitch idea. I still would like to try to put it in the box. I think if its reenforced properly, it could work. I just have to figure out where to put the beams
